Welcome to the forum and I am sorry you are dealing with a difficult adult child. Many of us are. Do you have contact with her? I have also found that intolerance is huge among many people. I see this in my profession and it isn't just young adults. And yes, one or two of my EC have these narrow and uneducated viewpoints that X is terrible because they were taught that in college or read about it online. Its narrow thinking but they get angry if you try to have a broad perspective. We don't talk anything like politics with any of our adult children except one of them who is not estranged and enjoys listening to others and gives us information not just rhetoric so we learn also. Some of these estrangement forums are not very busy on Daily Strength. I personally found the book, Done with the Crying, to be very very helpful to me. I don't like the beg and write apology letters approach in most situations.

Thanks for your comment. There is no contact with her. She is a 45 minute drive away. She does not answer my calls or texts. The way I see it, nearly everything in today's "culture" has become politicized and most of it shouldn't have been. So if I comment on a subject she doesn't agree on she complains I'm being political. See what I mean? There is so much agenda driven bullshit in television "news" these days. My husband became unemployed about 5 years ago, and I plan to retire in about 5 months. We want to make a return back to warmer climate and family so we can finally resume having (maskless!) social interaction once again. Being in our 60s it will be nice to escape Colorado winters. And since our only daughter will not engage there's little reason to stay here. She's a big girl now and has her own life. It's long past time for us to reclaim our lives. We weren't perfect parents (who is?) but this emotional blackmail is getting old.

If I am being honest, I can see this both ways. Where I live, we call it having no filter and that means some people say anything they want and expect others to suck it up and be agreeable. I also know a lot of stories of young adults telling mom and dad to go stuff it. It sounds like you have the choice of letting her go or trying to manage the things you like to talk about. I agree with you that its your time to live your life as you want to live it. If it feels too much like all you can talk about is the weather and even that makes her reactive or over reactive, then it isn't a happy relationship. Our kids grow up and do not become little clones of us and this can sometimes shock us parents. They think and do life differently, which I bet we did the same with our parents. I know i parented and lived much differently than my parents did and I am watching my adult kids parent and live their lives in way that kinda shock me. Not bad, but totally different. But honestly, I did not talk about religion or politics with my folks either!
