Christmas Tree

How long have you left up you Christmas tree in years past?

One winter, when I was a young single Mom, in my late twenties, and living in a very cold cabin in the woods, I left my tree up until March because it was so pretty and it still looked like new. It was a Noble Fir which lasts the longest anyway, but the funny part is that when I went to take it down, I found an envelope stuck in one of the branches. I opened it and it had a check for $100 in it! It felt like a miracle because I really needed it at that moment.

Usually, the real trees don't seem to last too long into January anyway, so the first week of the new year always seemed like as good a time as any to get rid of it and take down all the decorations. Even with using a fake tree, I'm conditioned to be over the holiday by New Year's so within the first week of the year it'll all come down and go back in the boxes not to be seen again for another 10-11 months.

We always put our tree up really early, sometimes even before Thanksgiving to get in the holiday spirit. It is usually around the end of January when we take it down. With a happy sigh that another Christmas Season has passed with much laughter and fun to be had by all.

Since living alone, the tree usually goes up around Advent Sunday, right after Thanksgiving. It comes down right after the twelve days of Christmas. Because of the presence of my grand daughters it has become ceremonial in putting up and taking away the decorations. But then when my own five children were small ,we observed the same then also!

Of course there has to be a celebration involving food. Everything that is celebrated in the Bible centers around food and the partaking of a meal including Eucharist. (We have cocoa and cookies decorating the tree and again taking it back down again.)

As we depart from Christmas Season , we look forward to the New Year again with food. And then we move into the sacrifice, again of food, into Lenten Season and Easter.. Again with food.

(I know we are supposed to be talkin about the Tree. However, when have I ever stayed on the topic at hand ? Besides, I have always been fascinated by tradition including the ethnticity of food!

Hmmmmmmm. Longest I remember leaving a tree up was one year during the separated years. I think it stayed up until the first of February that year. That year, the tree was a sign of better things, one of a very few in those dark years raising two daughters alone.

I always feel sad when I take our Christmas tree down. I leave ours up until January 11. That is my older daughter's birthday!

Epiphany (january 6 or the day after) the tree comes down and easter the manger comes down.

    I recently heard a great 2007 song the other day, "Falling Slowly" because it popped up in my newsfeed, accompanied by the sad news that the  male singer, Glen Hansard, just died in a motorcycle accident.  I learned that the song won an award and was featured in an indie movie called Once.
