I believe my fiancé is narcissistic after doing some research recently. My niece began working for the same company as him, and has learned a huge amount from his co-workers regarding his behavior. He is a story teller. He is always the hero, the helper, the only one who knows what to do and how to do it. He lies about his past achievements, always embellishing. He was in the army, but not as high up as he claims to be. He lies about his schooling and degrees. He makes up injuries. Always the victim. I thought at first that maybe he was a pathological liar, as he seems to lie about the silliest things, for no reason at all. I think that's a part of it, yes, but I really am coming to see that it's more than that. I see the impatient side. The anger. The always having to be right and the huge ego. Everything he has and likes is the best. Nothing is better. His opinion is all that matters. There isn't anything that upsets him or makes him cry when it comes to friends and family. He doesn't seem to be caring or empathetic.
He had a drug problem a few years back. Won't admit to it, even after an arrest. I have spent years now trying to get him back on track. Supporting him and helping him. All because I do really love him. But now I'm seeing what I think was always there but I chose not to see. Blinded by love I suppose.
Is there hope? I hate living a life where I'm second guessing everything he tells me. He isn't abusive and never puts me down. But the lying and everything else is enough to drive me bonkers.
run run run, get far away. They don't get better and if you have kids with them it can be even worse. I divorced an abusive narcissist years ago. He has continued to manipulate the court system and my children causing me pain that has been almost unbearable. Get into a relationship with a healthy man.
I have to agree with Salina , it doesn't get better ,it gets worse , the abuse WILL come! Get out, dump him !!!!! I am married to one and it's a living hell !!!!
It's interesting that you say that he is not 'abusive' … but abuse comes in many forms.
One of the worst things about being in a relationship with a Narcissist is infact the lies and mistrust that they sow.
He's lying at work to feed his diminished egotism, how sad is that?
Trust your intuition!
Read up on narcissism, that is a major red flag the lies he seems to be telling .
They also become worse with age !
