I have been biting my nails since I was a child, and this has always been a source of pain when I chew them to the quick. But in the past few years I have started to bite the skin on my fingers when the nails are gone. This has gotten progressively worse, and now I regularly chew skin off of my knuckles and this year even the palms of my hands.
I feel like if I don't stop now, I will keep working my way up my arms. My hands are in constant pain and are often bleeding, which is pretty embarrassing.
It is not hard for me to stop chewing when I am thinking about it, but I start to chew when I am engrossed in a project at work or at home, and I don't even realize that I started biting until I've already been doing it for a while.
Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?
