The rhyme as first printed in the fifteenth century was;
" Rub-a-dub-dub,
Three maids in a tub,
And who do you think were there ?
The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker,
All of them gone to the fair."
It might be inferred from this that the rhyme is referring to a
travelling peep show and the three gentlemen were paying customers.
Very sordid indeed !
