To me the mark of a truly great movie are three things...You, not once, wonder what time it is, and second, the minute its over you are wondering when you can see it again, and third -can't wait to tell people "You gotta see this movie!". With that I will throw out a few from the last few years. I just saw Flight with Denzel Washington -excellent movie. The Help -loved the movie, loved the book. Saint Ralph -super sweet movie about a young runner who thinks if he runs in the Boston Marathon, his mother will come out of a coma.
Whale Rider about a young girl in one of the Polynesian Islands. Hugo- a boy in search of his father's legacy. Crazy, Stupid, Love with Steve Carrell, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Little MIss Sunshine- a girl wants to realize her dream of becoming Little Miss Sunshine. These last two are so funny, you have to see them to appreciate them. MTC -more to come. Thanks for the thread LJ!
I thought that scene was hilarious.
You clearly love the same types of movies I do.
The one that I have seen too many times to count is "An Affair to Remember" old version. I will look for the other movies you mention. Saint Ralph looks very sweet - I will see the movie with Denzel Washington - per your recommendation - "Crazy, Stupid, Love - It's on HBO now - and frankly anything with Ryan Gosling is a watcher, imo. Thanks for the suggestions.
Two of my favorite quotes from An Affair to Remember-Terry McKay: Winter must be cold for those with no warm memories... we've already missed the spring!
Terry McKay - Oh, it's nobody's fault but my own! I was looking up... it was the nearest thing to heaven! You were there...
All I have to do is type that and I'm practically crying.
"me myself i" with rachel griffiths
Now during the holidays - It's a Wonderful LIfe. "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings," "George, Mary's just closing up, SHE'S A LIBRARIAN! (funny today huh?)," You see George, you really had a wonderful life." I could go on but I will stop now. The best movie, hands-down, showing us all how we intertwine and affect each others lives.
The Help; Forrest Gump, or most everything with Tom Hanks; Wizard of Oz; Lincoln with Daniel Day-Lewis; and I'm counting the days until Les Mis opens on Christmas Day.
Movies are magical!
I also loved "Simon Birch"
I love movies that make me laugh and cry.
I love this movie it is a real trip.
