I waited to repaint my kitchen for the new Sherman Williams NO VOC Paint that has been certified by LEEDS and GREENGUARD.
I primed my kitchen walls and cabinets, let the primer cure at 72 degrees or hotter (Kept my oven on all night) for 3 days (72hrs) and then applied one coat of the NO VOC PAINT. We let that cure at 72digrees for 3 days, then did the inside of the cabinets and touched up the walls. In other words we followed all their instructions.
On the 4th day after the cabinets were finished or the 7th day after we started the job the walls started off gassing a horrible stench. I HAD A HORRIBLE REACTION TO THE SMELL. My skin started to burn and it felt like hundreds of bee stings, then I started to itch both of which are standard histimine reactions. Then my eyes swelled almost shut, my sinuses started pouring, my ears started aching from the pressure in my sinuses and I developed a major headache. Also, I developed Anual Bleeding and couldn't urinate or have a bowel movement without the toilet water turning bright red with blood. Along with the bleeding, I developed diarria and stomach upset.
When the Sherman-Williams rep came to my very dirty house in Woodburn OR he kept saying, "I don't understand, everyone loves our paint. No one has ever reported a reaction before." The Legal Department sent me an insulting letter asking me why I felt that their paint has/was causing me problems. I sent them an email and a hard paper copy explaining that I wasn't sick before the paint. The smell was horrible and I finally settled on Venting the kitchen by using my Kitchen hood fan on high 24 hrs a day and Putting a box fan in the kitchen sink on high to vent the Chemical Gasses out the kitchen window. I say my Dr, He referred me to an Allergy Dr, he referred to OHSU Allergy Department, the are going to refer me to OHSU Toxicalogy Department.
I am currently taking 6ea of 25mg of Diphenhydramine HCI ANTIHISTAMINE (the max dose) daily and I am functioning. I am also taking 6,000 mg of Vitamin C, 1,000 mg of B6 and fighting with my husband. I wanted to remove the old cabinets and replace them with Stainless Steel Commercial Kitchen Cabinets, but no my husband reminded me that Sherman-Williams had A NEW NO VOC PAINT THAT WAS CERTIFIED BY GREENGUARD AND LEEDS.
As of now it has it has been 44 days of venting the kitchen, sufferfing from itching, burning and other painful probems with no end in sight. Sherman-Williams has asked me to send all my medical bills and DRs consultation files to them for consideration. YEA, LIKE THOSE SOBs will do anything except stonewall my request for my medical bills not covered by insurance be paid by Sherman-Williams.
My husband is very angry and insisting I get medical treatment for the DRs at OHSU (Oregon Health Sciences University). He is demanding that I find out what is the Toxic substance in the paint that is making me itchy and still very sick. I am unable to spend more than 4 hrs in my kitchen without having to leave.
I'm waiting for an appointment with the OHSU Toxicologiists DRs. I have to be referred to the Tocicologist Department. I am currently fighting with Silverton Medical Group to send my paperwork to the Legal Department at Sherman-Williams.
In other words I'm getting screwed all around. SO I'M SUBMITTING THIS TO YOU IN HOPES THAT OTHERS HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THIS SHERMAN-WILLIAMS NO VOC, GREEN GUARD AND LEEDS CERTIFIED PAINT. if you have please email me.
I am thinking about having a law firm sue Sherman-Williams, GreenGuard and LEEDS. What has happened is the following: (1) They rmoved the VOCs for the paint. (2) They substituted something else to help the paint dry. (3) THEY DID NOT TEST THE PAINT WITH MCS SUFFERS. THEY USED NORMAL PEOPLE FOR THEIR TESTING. (4) They would be able to make millions of dollares from their sales of a NO VOC PAINT, GREEN GUARD AND LEEDS CERTIFIED, SO THEY WENT AHEAD WITH THE SALE OF THE PAINT. (5) The math breakes down as follows, 1 billion dollars in profit, 300 millions in legal fees fighting the reports of reactons and suffering from sensative people. A 700 billions dollar profit and some work for their legal department.
Sweet deal for Sherman-Williams. Sour deal for everyone who buys there expensive NO VOC PAINT.
