MS People Dealing with MS Pain Community Group
So many people have pain from their Multiple Sclerosis in so many ways. What works for you? The ony thing that works for me is serious pain control from a pain specialist. I know it is hard for some people out there to swallow but narcotics work, they work they work they work!
A year and a half ago I suffered every hour, even in my sleep I was crying from the pain. My neurologist got tired of hearing me complain about my pain and told me to see a pain management specialist. I had never heard of a PMS and didn't know what to do. My PCP referred me to a pain management group and it was the best thing I've ever done in treating my MS symptoms and improving my quality of life.
My PMS immediately changed my script of neurontin (prescribed by neuro) to Lyrica. He also started me off slowly on non-narcotic type meds, none of which really helped but they did take the "edge" off my pain. I continued to see the PMS searching for a better QOL. This led to me slowly starting off on narcotic pain management. Now I take Opana ER, 40 mg. twice a day and Lyrica. My neuro recently put me on Baclofin (spell?) My PMS also suggested that I substitute my Lexapro (anti-depressant) with Pristiq because it had some affect on pain.
I don't take the medications lightly. They seem to run my life now. Yes, I'm addicted and I know it. If I don't take my medications on time I'm in horrible pain plus I have to deal with withdrawal symptoms. I have to make sure that I can get to see the doctor every 30 days exactly to get that script refilled. I have to go to a special pharmacy to fill my script for Opana. It runs my life and I would like not to have to take my MS meds, but nothing else can control my pain like my current meds do. Since joining DS I have heard other folks who try holistic approaches and have very good luck with them. I was uneducated and didn't know any better to try such an approach, now it is too late for me. But the end result is improving my QOL and narcotics have done that in so many ways so I'm satisfied basically with my path.
If your doctor seems reluctant to prescribe narcotics, you might need to go to a pain specialist. I have had the opportunity to smoke pot a couple of times and found that it is a great treatment for MS pain. But it is illegal where I live.

2 herniated discs in my lumbar area and one ruptured disc. "They are not bad enough to cause pain," said the PM doc. LOL, AND I get hives and rashes from even taking an Aleve. I wish he could see me trying to get out of bed every day!
