What I hate the most is when a little kid looks at you and says Boy that Lady is fat or when you are in a swimming pool and the kids keeping looking at you under the water. There have been times that I have told the the kid that it hurts my feelings that they are doing that. It makes me so mad when you are out trying to do something about your weight and people look at you like what are you doing this for.

yeah exactly! you would think that people would say hey good for her shes trying to get in shape. i guess we just have to find our motivation from within and ignore the negitivity. we have to move more to lose more :)

Some people are just complete morons. I can be quite a belligerent person and I probably would have walked and stood in front of that womans car.... I have been trying to not let my temper get the best of me - but some people just need to know that what they are doing is WRONG. I was very upset about 2 years ago when my brothers wife was having their second child. I was standing barefoot in the hospital hall - 18 years old when an african american female nurse walks up to me - in front of my grandfather and father and says "Sweetie, please put on some shoes - The floors of these halls are covered in germs" She then proceeded to rub my stomach and said "We don't want the little one getting sick, do we?" I was mortified! Granted that we were in a labor and delivery unit - I wasn't wearing hospital garb.... I cried for a good 3 hours that day - my brother there with me the whole time. It was probably the worst day of my life when it comes to weight. There have been other occasions when kids in school asked if I was pregnant, and it can be REALLY hurtful....Highschool kids know better - they just did it to be mean.....

My goal os for that NEVER to happen to me again - until I actually am pregnant!

I can see why what the woman in the car did upset you so much, Lyds85. But, hon, you have to understand that some people don't feel GOOD unless they've made someone else feel bad. That woman has to be pretty miserable with herself to have behaved like that with you. So, while it hurt your feelings, I would feel more sorry for her than anything else.

Try to use what happened as a motivating factor to keep you firmly on your weight loss path. Time goes by so very fast. Before we know it, 2012 will be winding down. Make the very most of this year with your weight loss, so that, one day, you won't have to deal with crap like you experienced from other people.

I see what you're saying, Stephanie, but, I'm not sure what the race of the nurse had to do with it. Especially since you were in a labor and delivery unit, it would have been easier for someone to mistakenly think you were pregnant. It's one of the most common "innocent" mistakes people make with morbidly obese women. While the rubbing your stomach thing was a bit much, would it really have made any difference if a white nurse had done and said the same thing? Sorry to make an issue of this, but, I grew up in an environment where someone's race absolutely didn't mean anything. What really matters is who the person is inside. And, I still feel that way.

I wasn't bringing her race into it as a negative thing. My best friend is african american. I was only putting in every detail I remember - it is stuck in my head as if it happened yesterday. You're correct that it would have been no different if a white nurse had said it - or an asian nurse for that matter. I just know that nurses are supposed to be on their p's and q's with that stuff these days. My mother in law is a nurse and many hopsital employees have gotten into trouble over things like that. I didn't mean to offend anyone with my post. Sorry if it may have been misconstrued.

I think you are fine. I did not feel any racial overtones and like you said; the incident flowed with your description of the person. People have asked me several times - questions like - how far are you along - especially I am south-asian and people from my country like to place people into compartments - if you are successful you should be so and so having a family and so many kids and such and I am not in any such mould - sometimes I just feel that I would lose weight faster if there were not so much malice and negative attention attached to overweight people; its like many people want us gone and try to cause it to happen that way.

No problem, Stephanie. I get it with the details thing...I tend to be pretty detail-oriented myself. Again, sorry to have made it an issue. As an African-American woman myself, so much of the time I'm seen more as my race than as anything else. That starts to wear on you sometimes, so when I hear a story where the race of the person is added, but, to me, the person's race doesn't seem to have any relevance to the core of the story, I tend to question it. I appreciate your being willing to just explain without going ballistic, as some people on DS tend to do. : ) So, no harm, no foul.

I guess the bottom line is, as we all keep on our journeys, we won't have to run the risk of being mistaken for being pregnant anymore. (Well, my time for that is over anyway. If I was pregnant at 59, I should either be in the loonie bin or the Guiness Book of World Records - or both!) lol!!
