Here's my problem. I just started working a shift of 3 pm to midnight and I am having a hard time adjusting to it with my exercising and my eating. When I get home I usually can't go right to sleep because I'm so wound up, so I usually go to sleep around 2 am, then I usually get woken at 730 by my sister, but 5 1/2 hours is not enough for me, so I try to go back to sleep and like today, I slept till 845 so I did feel a little better. I got some exercise in, but my brain has not been doing well because of my sleeping pattern, so my exercise was not very good. Now when it comes to eating, I didn't eat anything until noon and then I usually eat again at 7 during my lunch break at work, and then when I get home I'm hungry again and I have a little snack.
Anyway, if anyone has suggestions on how I should do my schedule with sleeping and eating and exercising I would love to hear them. And I truly do take them all to heart. Thanks.

Sorry, but I work shift work and i'm struggling too. I try to make sure I have healthy snacks but I'm always just so tired that I almost never exercise and I still eat badly. Hope you get some suggestions. I need them too.

I don't work outside the home but my dh does work from 9 pm to 7 am 4 nights a week then he gets 4 days off and so on it goes. He comes home in the mornings and eats breakfast then goes to sleep. He gets up and eats and goes to work taking a meal with him to work also as it is a 10 hour shift. He walks (he is somewhat disabeled) at work when possible. He can't really exercise due to his disabilities except for walking sometimes and sometimes that is hard for him as well. I would suggest the best time to exercise is when you get up and after you have breakfast but like I said I don't work outside the home so it is just a suggestion. I exercise after I have had breakfast and my morning meds.

You've only just started shift work and it might be a while before you get used to it but then it should get better. Generally its not advisable to eat before going to bed but if you do make it light and maybe a carbo as carbos makes us sleepy. Or perhaps you could eat again before you come home, have a bath (instead of eating) which will relax you and help you sleep. Then when you get up have breakfast. Let us know how it goes and what works for you.

I used to work PM shift, and had the same problem but I lived alone so I could sleep in. Try comforting and easy to digest foods after work, like oatmeal or cereal, or tea and toast. If you are too wound up, can you exercise after work without disturbing other's sleep? It's no different that exercising after work if you had a day job. Good luck!

I have worked the pm shift for about 11 years now and it is a struggle to know what to eat. I eat a light breakfast and then eat my main meal about1 then take my supper with me which is usually a sandwich with low cal bread and lunch meat. I do take cottage cheese with fruit at times. I usually eat my supper about 7 and then about 9 I eat a large rice cake so I won't get too hungry. I get home about 11:30 and eat a slice of toast with small amount of peanut butter on it so I will have enough protenin to get though the night. I am hypoglycemic so have to keep my blood sugar up. I don't get in be until about 1am and wake up about 8. I don't get enough sleep either but I try to rest some during the day before I go back to work. Hope this helps.

Just need to add I usually get my exercise in (when I do it) around 10 or 11 on my Gazelle. We have stairs at work so in the winter I try to use them more instead of the elevator. In the summer when it isn't too hot I go out and walk a couple of blocks then back again. I can't go too far away from work since I'm the charge nurse but they usually know where to find me. I also have just walked around the parking lot.
