Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer, usually associated with previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, cancerous cells develop in the mesothelium. Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart).

I just found this group and joined. I became aware of mesothelioma and what a horrendous disease it is after my adult daughter may have been exposed to asbestos after a 1970s building next door to her was taken down without adequate dust control. This causes me a lot of worry and I feel the only thing I can do is work for treatments and a cure.
I wanted to make members aware that asbestos is still imported and used in the U.S. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. imported and used an estimated 1,820 tons of asbestos in 2007, an estimated 84% of which was used in roofing materials. Please contact your congressional leaders and ask them to support this bill and tell everyone else you know to do the same. It really is awful to know that asbestos is still in wide use. Ever since I learned about asbestos and mesothelioma, I started looking into the news to see what comes up on both subjects, hoping there might be some sort of medical breakthrough. Instead, for the most part, I got stories about asbestos found in schools and office buildings or the long running asbestos case in Libby, MT that went on recently. I also found on several occasions that Canada still exports asbestos in massive quantities.
Unfortunately, I think this means that we not only have to deal with the fallout of asbestos here in the US, but we will be seeing the same problems with mesothelioma for years to come. I've seen a lot of stories with optimistic outlooks, but I think that there's still a lot we need to do to help avoid asbestos exposure. I think that you've hit the hammer on the head asking for better legislation, but I also think that more immediate action helps as well. I hope this mesothelioma lawyer can help everyone with their personal battles.
