Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind, Memories, sweetened thru the ages just like wine. Come here and remember,, the good times and the bad.

Summertime meant good eating around my house in the 50s. My dad was a butcher. He would be called a meat cutter now since he didn't actually kill any animals. And he owned his own grocery and market. Back then, welders would get 50 gallon steel drums. Clean them out, and make barbecue pits out of them. They'd cut them in half to make the pit and the lid. Add a smoke stack to the lid with a louver inside to control the smoke and temperature. They'd put it on a framework made of pipe with a set of wheels at one end and and handles at the other so you could move it anywhere you wanted. Several Saturday or Sunday nights during the summer, my parents would invite the neighbors, or some other friends, or the family over for supper. And oh what a feast! Dad would empty the market. Or so it seemed. He'd start off with big, thick, juicy link sausages. Those were for those who couldn't wait for the main meat or to wete their appetites. Then pork spareribs, 2 inch thick pork chops, chicken halves and inch and a half thick steaks would make their way to the pit. All of them slathered in his favorite sauce, Woody's. Oh, the smell could starve you to death even if you'd just eaten! There was plenty of beer and soft drinks to go around. While this was all going on, Mom was in the kitchen making potato salad and baked beans. And garlic bread. Oh, could she make garlic bread. She'd melt melt some butter on the stove with diced garlic, slather it on the slices, wrap the loaves in foil, and put them in the oven with the baked beans to warm up. When all was done, it was put on a big wooden barbecue table in the back yard. You had not lived unless you'd had a summer's night feast with my parents. Did you have certain foods or get-togethers during the summer?

I remember when I was very little having picnics at the park just down the road a piece. There would be aunties and uncles and hamburgers, hotdogs, and every type of salad you can imagine and every type of jello. I was always a little leery of jello. it moved. The very best part of the picnic was the home made ice cream. We would take turns on the crank and when it was FINALLY done......absolute heaven!! My tongue did cartwheels. YUM OH

That homemade ice cream brought back some good memories. When I was very young, maybe 3 or 4 years old, my dad would cover the ice cream freezer with a burlap bag and have my sister or me sit on it while he cranked. He said it helped steady the freezer. For us, on a summer's day, it let at least a part of us be cold for a while.
