Downtown Waco was always an adventure in the late 40s and early 50s. The stores had "character",,personality. I remember S.H Kress and Woolworth's were right next to each other. They had wooden floors and each had it's own smell and look. Woolworth's was fancier and sold higher end merchandise. Not department store stuff,,,just a little lower. Where you would smell fancy perfumes and soaps in Woolworth's, you'd smell the cheaper perfumes in in Kress's. But they did have one smell in common,,,wood oil. That came from cleaning the floors with oil mixed with sawdust. One of the department stores was different from the others. Different because it had a mezzanine floor. A floor between floors. But it wasn't a full floor. It was at the back of the store. The store offices were on the floor. And it was special because it had a little cafe and you could look over the main floor while you ate lunch It was a favorite of my mom's on day trips downtown. She had a favorite lunch there,,,vegetable soup with cornbread sticks and we had just about every time. If not, there was the BLT club sandwich that was special because it had three slices of bread and was cut into wedges. And, it was special on the outside because it had a glassed in full size display area away from the front. You could go inside the area and look at the display windows and the case. And on rainy or cold days, you could stand inside the area to wait for the bus to come by. Can you remember any unusual stores?
