Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind, Memories, sweetened thru the ages just like wine. Come here and remember,, the good times and the bad.

Every Christmas, the grownups got silly. See if you think so. Back in the early 50s you couldn't buy hard liquor or wine in our county, so Dad would put the whole family in the car and drive about thirty minutes to a small town in the adjacent county to buy whiskey. We'd all stay in the car while he went inside a "package store" to get the season supply. Usually, that meant four or five fifths of "Old Crow" and a bottle of Mogen David concord wine for Mom. These were the days of six ounce soft drinks and they seemed to be just the right size for a sneaky "nip". All the relatives, aunts and uncles, and friends would drop by on Christmas Eve for a little informal get-together. As soon as they were in the house, Dad would ask if they'd like "a little Christmas Cheer" No one refused. Christmas Cheer was a little Old Crow in a bottle of Coke or 7-Up. They'd take a sip out of the bottle and Dad would fill the bottle with the Old Crow. Then, the person getting the cheer would put their thumb over the top and turn the bottle upside down and back a few times to mix it. They never used glasses or ice,,,just the bottle. Then, they'd take a sip and start to giggle. They'd get a silly grin on their face like they were getting away with a little "sin". If they wanted Egg Nog, Dad would ask if they wanted a "little Nog" with it. Old Crow was also nog. Then, they'd just walk around talking with each other and munching on the snacks and Christmas sweets Mom had put on the dining table. Mom made one sweet that was off limits to us kids,,,whiskey balls. Yep,made with Old Crow. In those days, there was so much vanilla extract in the egg nog that the kids got a taste of "sin" Well, this would go on till it was time to put us kids to bed, then everybody went home. It was fun to watch the silly grownups.
