I was a radio news reporter the year George McGovern ran for president. He held a rally in downtown Waco on the main street. Areas of the street and sidewalks were roped off to control the crowd. There was an open area roped off in front of stage where McGovern was to speak. Nobody seemed was in the area so I used it cross the street several times to get remarks from people in the crowd. I'd run back and forth carrying a reel to reel battery powered tape recorder and microphone. Everything was going great until a secret service agent stopped me. He told me it was a restricted area and only authorized personnel could cross it. He also asked me to take off the pin on the lapel of my coat. I told him I would if he would give me a good reason. The pin was from the local United Way fund drive and was shaped like a check mark with an arrowhead at the top. He gave me a good reason. It looked too much the pin he was wearing,,,,signifying him as a secret service agent.
