Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind, Memories, sweetened thru the ages just like wine. Come here and remember,, the good times and the bad.

Did you ever have a rotating television antenna? When we got our first television in 1958, there's was only one local television station in Waco. Why my parents decided to get a set at the time with only one local station is still a puzzle to me. Maybe it was because Waco was halfway between Dallas and Austin, which had two or more stations, and he'd seen them on friends' sets. Anyway, in order to get those stations, a special rotating antenna was needed. The antenna consisted of 3 aluminum, 4 foot long, horizontal rods connected with 3, 3 foot long, vertical ones, all connected to a 10 foot pole attached to the roof of the house. At the base of the pole was an electric motor that made the antenna rotate 360 degrees. A wire ran down inside the house to a control box that sat on top of the television. The box had a dial on it that could be turned to settings for north, south, east, and west and all directions in between. By setting the dial, the antenna would rotate to the direction. Dallas stations were north and Austin was south, but never directly. They were always a little to either side and had to be carefully dialed it. When the the dial was moved, a click-click sound was made as the control box moved to each little mark on the dial. There were some stations east and west that we could receive, but we had to be careful. You couldn't go directly from west to north because the antenna couldn't hit it from west. You had to move the dial from west to south to east to north. It became an art to dial in the correct direction for each station and my parents tried to remember them, but it wasn't easy since there were only marks between the primary directions.
