Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind, Memories, sweetened thru the ages just like wine. Come here and remember,, the good times and the bad.

My Mom had her dream house built in 1952 in a newly opening housing addition. As you'll notice in the photo, there were no houses on either side. It was on a gravel road going up a hill. There were no houses passed our house. Not even a road. Just an open field that would hold 2 blocks of new houses. This open field would be our adventure for our bikes. All the kids in the neighborhood would ride their bikes through the tall grass and weeds. Sometimes, there were soft sand spots that would pretty much stop your bike if you were going too slow. When the builders came in, they gave us more adventures as they built the new houses. There were dirt piles and sand piles to ride over. Some of the dirt piles were very steep and it took a lot of power and speed to go over them. We'd have races, going from one pile to another, following the leader till you could pass them and become the leader yourself. When the floors were put in, we'd ride on the floors. The biggest challenge was before the floor was put in and the 2X4 supports were in. Ever try to ride a bike on a 2 inch wide board? We did it. Needless to say, there were a few accidents and we were lucky to survive. Both our bikes and ourselves.

i had a set of wire baskets on the back because i planned to get a paper route in third grade. i totally LOVED that bike and spent so much time on it, that it was like another appendage. most of us had the same style bike and that didn't change until people hit around 8th grade. i remember my boyfriend in 9th grade still had the smaller bike with the bannana seat but somehow he and his friend had rigged the seats to be super high and could still ride it that way, but had to get on and off of it by a tree or jump to the side. it was tricky. it was such a kid thing to have at the age of 14, but i think 9th grade is a kind of in between age. some are starting to work somewhere for real and others are still kids and others are prepping for sat's and visiting colleges with family or friends to get a feel for that. teens are weird years.
a bike is a great thing.
