My first full-time radio job in my hometown brought a little excitement. The station had been Top 40-Rock&Roll for years, and had been the number 1 station in the market for a long time. But, it seems, the teenage listeners weren't buying the high price products advertisers wanted to sell. The station wasn't making a lot of money, so they changed the music to country and western Well, this made the teenagers madder than h,,l and we were always getting complaint calls and threats. We were on 24 hours a day and after a teenager managed to get into the building, I got a little nervous. We were just outside the city limits which meant the sheriff's office was the law. They told us it would take maybe 30 minutes to answer a call from us. I worked the midnight to 6AM shift and kept a 12 gauge shotgun in the studio for protection. One night I heard a ruckus at the front of the building and went to see what was going on. The only lights were in the studio so the lobby was dark. The big glass front was dark amber shade glass, but there were 3 yellow lights showing from the ceiling outside so I could see out, but nobody could see in. I found 3 teenagers yelling and screaming that they were going to come in and tear up the place. I asked them to leave and they said they wouldn't. After a while, I told them I had a shotgun and they should leave. They didn't believe me till I poked it out the front door. I fired 3 shots at them as they left, bouncing 2 on their back bumper and putting on across the hood. I called the SO and told them what happened in case they got any calls about the noise.
