The circus has come to town,,,the Ringling Brothers, Barnum, & Bailey Circus. It's being performed in our fairgrounds coliseum. That's a far cry from my memories. Do you remember when the circus came to town when you were a kid? It was a big deal in Waco. Every kid that could went down to the train tracks to watch them unload the animals and equipment. Then, they held a parade through town before they headed out to set it up in a big vacant lot outside of town. Back then, it was held under a huge tent and the elephants helped put it up. And going to the circus? WOW! You went to another world. Remember the sideshows with the bearded lady, siamese twins, the midgets, reptile people, and other oddities? Remember going into the animal tent to see the lions and tigers, horses and elephants? You bought 2 bags of peanuts,,,one for you and another to feed the elephants. There was sawdust everywhere,,,on the ground outside the tents and inside the tents. And when you went into the main tent, it just got better. Three rings! How where you going to keep up with everything? Remember the parade inside where you first saw the clowns? And entertainment? Couldn't be beat with the tightrope walkers, trapeze artists, clowns running everywhere, elephants doing tricks, people on horses, and the biggest thing,,,the lion tamer. Remember getting into the stands? They were so noisy and didn't seem too safe, but that was part of the adventure. Circuses seem kind of "sanitary",,,now.
