Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind, Memories, sweetened thru the ages just like wine. Come here and remember,, the good times and the bad.

Summer nights in the neighborhood in the 50s led to unusual games and mischief. Throwing water soaked towels at passing cars and running like crazy, leaving a burning bag of fresh dog poo on a door step and ringing the doorbell of an unliked neighbor, and spraying water at passing cars could get you in trouble and in the case of teenagers in the car, hurt. A game of scrub in a small, but well lighted backyard could be interesting and dodgeball in the same yard could hurt. But, our gang came up with a great game and the perfect place to play it. The neighbor across the street on the corner(their 2 daughters were part of our gang) was the perfect place. It had a long front porch and being on the corner, a street light. We called the game, "Chase". It was a combination of hide and seek and tag and was played with teams,,usually boys against girls. The object of the game was to get all the members of the other team on the porch at the same time. One team, "It", would have to find members of the other team who had hidden somewhere in 3 yards, and tag them. The tagged member had to get on the porch and stay there. But, there was a way the tagged member could get off the porch. If another member of his team could tag him on the porch, he was "released" and back in the game. When all the members were on the porch, the it team would hide. It could go on and on and there never was a winner unless you counted the times one team got the other team on the porch. The game usually stopped when the parents called in to go to bed.

What a great memory. The things we did as kids and then called it playing. Most all of it was harmless. Growing up on a farm or a ranch meant living quite apart from a neighbors' home. Probably the worse thing my older brother and I did was go out in the fields and try to ride the cows. We probably did it about 20 times before getting caught. We knew it was wrong. I never did succeed in getting onto a cows back. My brother was quite successful. Thing is he probably only stayed on for 5 feet before he got tossed off. But I thought he was so marvelous to be able to do it. Then we moved to a large ranch. We had horses. It was our job to go round up the cows in the evening. At first it was so much fun. About the third time it was hard work. The idea of riding on an animals back just lacked the fun of trying to do something that was so wrong.
