I was thinking about begonias the other day. To most people that would be an odd thing to hear from someone. But, begonias were a big part of my life for a while. My mom's final change to her dream house a new driveway that curved from the street, across the front yard to a carport. It went across the walk from the street to the house and was above the walk and the area of the walk from the driveway to the front steps was made level with the driveway. This, with the flower bed in front of the house, made a small triangular area and was covered with grass. It was hard to mow the small irregular area and looked kind of odd to me, so I decided to make it into a flower garden. Begonias caught my eye because of the different colors of flowers and leaves that were available. It became a ritual every spring to buy several of each color and plant them in a curving design. Dusty Millers were planted next to the main flower bed to separate the two. The beautiful little plants saved my life in a way. One weekend as I was planting them, I got chest pains and had to stop several times to let them go away. I blamed them on a hard week's work. When I got to work early Monday morning I got the pains again and remembered them from the weekend and thought nothing of it, until I realized I hadn't done any physical labor. Then other symptoms came around,,,dizziness, weakness, pain in the arm and a cold sweat. That's when I went to the emergency room which led to my bypass surgery.

Oh Foxysdad. How awful that you went through that. I am so sorry. By the way you describe the driveway and where it went I could just see it. That area being filled with all the color from the Begonias had to of been just beautiful. I bet to just drive past your home it was a sight just to see.

Foxysdad, Here I am just rereading all the different things that friends are writing here. I just reread what I had to say here. It is so embarrassing. I just went on and on about the begonias. I did not even mention a word about you having emergency bypass surgery. You know that I really do not know a thing about bypass surgery. How long were you in the hospital? When you were released were there alot of different things you had to do? How long did it take before you got your strength back? Did you have anyone there to help you? Also, has this affected you even up to today? How long was it until you felt good enough to go back to work? You do not have to answer any of my questions. I am just curious is what.

I was in the hospital a little over a week and away from work for 10 weeks, but it was a month before I could work a full shift at the t.v. station. I had to learn to walk again because they took the vein for the bypass from the inside of my right leg. They had me wear very tight support hose that came up to my hip. It was my older sister's job to put them on and take them off for a while since I couldn't bend my leg. I walked 3 or 4 times a day to get the leg stretched and get strength back in it. The leg had to be elevated for an hour twice a day. One of the nice things was I was allowed to eat anything I wanted for 2 weeks. My first meal was a Whataburger, fries and chocolate malt. A funny thing happened. I got a craving for oranges. Its funny because I never cared for them. But, Mom had some in the fridge and I started eating them. I was eating 5 or 6 a day. The leg has never been right since the surgery,,,swollen,,weak and easily infected. All the while, I was getting full paychecks from work. I knew I had run out of sick time, personal time, and vacation time and couldn't figure out the paychecks. When I was able to walk a little better, I went to the station and asked the auditor about the checks. All she said was, "We take care of our own."

I'm so sorry to hear you've gone through so much foxysdad. But it's good to know that someone cared. I'm sure the full paychecks were appreciated as well as...out of appreciation. The one flower that I remember is the four o'clock. As a child, it amazed me that they actually opened around four o'clock each day.

Flowers, How interesting. I have never seen a four oclock flower. Can you describe it to me?

The flowers I remember my grandmother having were magenta but I believe they come in other colors also. They respond to heat and open later in the afternoon when it's cooler outside. They grew about three feet tall, had leaves, but no petals. I don't think the four o'clock flower is as popular as some of the other flowers. Where I lived, I believe they were considered wild flowers. It's interesting you should ask because I remember other plants considered to be wild: buttercups, cattails, sunflowers, etc.
