I remember my mother standing there hanging tinsel on the tree. She did it perfectly and when she was done it was like a lit up, tall, silver cone I loved looking at the tinsel with the color of the lights sparkling and sort of dancing.
One year my brother, sister and I got up very early, packed all of the presents into a big sheet, and hid them in another room away from the tree - waiting for my parents to get up. We heard them coming into the living room asking each other where the presents were - very confused. That was our signal to drag that sheet with presents on/in it, into the living room - all of us saying "Ho Ho Ho" in our very deepest voices. We laughed a lot that year.
That's probably one of my best memories of Christmas.
moving the presents comment of linda jean....one of our step fathers was a big thief. he would give our stuff to his sister's daughter, they didn't NEED the presents and it caused a lot of CHAOS, i think 90 percent of the toys she had were actually MINE. lol. even in the 80's he was still stealing and causing chaos and by that time we weren't living in the north east at all, wish i hadn't even visited actually.
one year someone robbed presents, that's what lindajeans comment reminded me of. i later discovered this happens yearly lots of places and i always wonder if its the same person/people doing it. one year it was a boyfriend of mine stealing and we caught him red-handed, then my younger brother (who had a crush on him and was basically gay with him even though he was a minor and my boyfriend was a teenager, tall who lifted weights and didn't appear gay except that he was always coming on to people's boyfriends and brothers and anyone else all over the place. what a jerk! the younger brother, let the gay boyfriend of MINE into the house again and i think he actually helped him ROB OUR PRESENTS by helping the boyfriend load the presents into the boyfriend's car. can you be any dumber?
another year, my stepfather tracked the now ex-boyfriend, when he broke in and stole EVERYTHING and it was in his car. i didn't even know him by then. i told EVERYONE that both of us knew, what he did and all the stories from other people started coming out about him and his family stealing. this was in bergen county, nj. they were from an affluent town by then and people snickered that they were living in a large house on other people's money that they stole (still true to this day). always the same snickers.
when i caught him stealing my jewelry as we always received stockings with jewelry in it, i was totally amazed that someone could be THAT LOWLY, especially over christmas. bad enough at another time of the year, but christmas? i could go on with a zillion stories about the horrors of that boyfriend's family...except lots of people have christmas horror stories. it all looked picture perfect though, it just never was.
there is a book out called "the way we never were" and it talks about how we are trained to conform to something that really doesn't exist. like one layer of good, the layer in the photos, and twenty layers of horror stories.
