I remember the milkman, but we never used him. My dad owned a grocery store. I kinda felt left out that the milkman passed by our house. One of the local bakeries used high school girls to sell loaves of bread door to door.

We use to have Charlie chip man deliver us chips in a big round can.My hubby had a milkman when he was small.

We had a milkman at home and when I got married he even came to my house.I don't remember the bread man though..I do remember the beer and pop man made home delivers. Wonder if they still do..Any one know?

Yep milk man. We had one. They drove orange trucks. Competing dairies had white trucks.

As a matter of fact my dad used to BE a milkman. he delivered milk and bread in Western Massachusetts back in the day. He used to tell me stories about it.

i remember cloth diapers! my kids were in them since we couldnt afford disposable ones all the time! but i had to wash my kids diapers! no delivery for me!

..LoL my first three oldest children used the cloth diapers. P,s no delivery for me wither. I rinsed the soiled.. ones.. out in toilet,,,, The **pooed** ones.LOL then put them in the wash.LOL remember did anyone have a diaper pail? i did.. Keep it closed.... Up too. til the wash..LOL

The disposable diapers did not.. to come out til my third child was born.

As a child growing up in the mid 1950's into the 60's the Bread truck was a familiar site on our street along with the Milkman and his truck. They were apart of the atmosphere and character which made up that time period. However, I should mention one other site on just some streets. The late 1950's marked the end of the " ICE TRUCK ". Although most people by the end of the 1950's had electric refrigerators in there homes, some like my poor old grandmother still had there " ICE BOX ". I can still see in my minds eye the ICEMAN with his large Tongs bringing a big block of ice into my grandmothers house to put in the icebox. They are all gone now into the pages of history and memory.

Not really gone.... we still remember them. My grandmother had an old fashioned ice box back in the day. Grandpa bought her a modern REFRIGERATOR back in the '50s. They still had it when I was growing up. My mother used it until she had to sell the house.

We did have a milkman and I used to love sitting on the metal milk-box that sat right outside our front door on the stoop for years when I was just a li'l girl. That thing always felt cool in the shade even in hot summertime... there was a big tree that shaded it and it was the best (and highest) seat in the house. I recall the glass bottles and in fact, I remember the first time the milkman dropped off a special "sample" bottle of the company's all new chocolate milk line. GREAT stuff. Cream at the top and all! YUM.
My dad was a breadman for awhile working for a place called Holtermann's Bakery in Staten Island NY. I don't recall this because I think the did that before I came along. But he still had the hat years later!

Yes, after we moved from the farm into town we had a milk man, he delivered the milk in quart glass bottles and picked up the empty clean bottles we left on the porch for him.
I used cloth diapers on C also, I bought them and washed them myself. The most popular brand was "Bird Eye Diapers" they supposedly held more pee than the other brands, used the plastic panties over them too, especially at night and nap time just like settinsun.

dont think they even had birds eye when my kids were little....the best for mine were curity! they had the middle all super thick there!!! made things so easy to do....but still a pain to have to wash!

good thing was......it did get us to potty train them sooner! anything to save us having to wash them!
