For centuries, nudes with bottoms of exaggerated size have been represented in drawings and statues. Breasts have not been exaggerated to the same extent; in fact they have often been represented as flatter and smaller than reality: big hanging breasts are rare in classical statues and drawings. Most of the representations with big bottoms, have been female.
Soon after photography was invented in the late 1830s, nudes were a favourite subject. 'Postcards' sold by shops such as newsagents and tobacconists were popular in Paris (although they would be banned if sent through the post). Many concentrated on bottoms. Photographs of ladies with ample cheeks were very popular, some of them drawing inspiration from classical paintings and statues. Some were more explicitly sexual. There was a full range of sexual positions but many relied on generously proportioned bottoms. A high proportion showed the complete nude standing and covering the whole photograph, rather than close ups. Few shaved, not surprising as the safety razor as we know it became available only from 1901 following King C. Gillette's invention. Male nudes were rare - just a few, apparently acting in complementary roles to enhance the sexuality of the ladies.
