The Variety of Knickers

Panties, pants, underpants, undies, briefs, panty briefs knickerpants, knickers: call them what you will.  Knickers come in all shapes and amounts of coverage of the cheeks from G-strings (practically none), through thongs which cover the crevice but not the cheeks, through various proportions of the cheeks to full coverage as in maxi briefs, vanity fair knickers and boy shorts.

Knickers are mostly single sex but some are unisex (for both women and men).  Specialised knickers for those with heavy incontinence have some form of absorption for urine, faeces or both, often in the form of a pad.  Fixation knickers hold a pad in place.  Diapers have a built-in area of absorption rather than a detachable pad.

I think I can appreciate why ladies in loose fitting skirts might like the freedom of a cool summer breeze swirling round their knickerless lady parts.  However, I do not find the prospect of going without protection for my outer clothes at all attractive.

 

Knickers for Arousal

Since the nineteenth century, probably before, underwear has changed in function: it has been chosen less for warmth, more for arousal; more attention has been given to the need for washing it resulting from bodily leakages - gussets, use of pads, panty liners.

In the nineteenth century, knickers had no gusset.  They were in two attached halves with an open crotch, hence 'pair of knickers'.  The open crotch was to allow going to the toilet without removing them or any of the heavy clothing fashionable at the time.  Another purpose was surely warmth rather than sexual stimulation.  Underwear with closed crotches started around the turn of the nineteenth into the twentieth centuries.

 

It seems to me unlikely that knickers could become a sexual stimulant for women until the 1930s with the popularity of briefs hugging the cheeks - 'panty briefs'.  Elastic yarn was also invented in the 1930s.  The closed crotch and gusset allowed sanitary and menstrual arrangements without some kind of belt.  Menstrual pads and tampons were improved at around the same time. 

 

Bras too, like those of the present, began to emphasise rather than reduce the appearance of the breasts (the word 'brassiere' was shortened to 'bra' in the 1930s).  Also in the 1930s cup sizes using letters representing the size and firmness of the breasts began.

Men too received attention in 1935 when Y-Front briefs by 'apparel engineer' Arthur Kneibler took shape.  Drawing attention to male genitals and following the contours of their bottoms, like women's panty briefs, must have seemed daring at the time: the 1930s was surely a time when the modern woman and to a lesser extent man, took shape.  

 

Knicker Gussets - Retro Knickers

'Retro knickers' with a large gusset date from the late 1930s and are still popular.  Since the 1940s, briefs which are lower on the waist and cover less of the cheeks have become increasingly popular, alongside retention of more traditional styles and high-waist, full-cheek vanity fair panties.  Fabrics available have played a part in the development of knickers as a sexual implement but are not wholly responsible.  From the mid 1930s, nylon quickly became popular, followed by other hard-wearing and then stretchy materials; but earlier fabrics such as cotton can be used to make attractive panties.

Vanity Fair Knickers

Sexual stimulation is often used as a selling point for ladies' panties.  The expression 'vanity fair' was used at least as early as 1920 for full-cut briefs with a hint of self-indulgence, but took some time to become widely used. It is an expression often used by mainstream retailers on their on-line sites and high street stores for full-back, high waist knickers.  There is a hint of self-indulgence, sin, decadence and transgression, perhaps relating to their stimulating effect in preparation for sexual pleasures.  (Vanity Fair was originally described in Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan (1678) as a stop along the pilgrim's route where there was never-ending attachment to self-pleasure.  Later, it was taken up by William Makepeace Thackeray in Vanity Fair (1848).)  Some brands have a triangular net or lace inset at the side of each leg about 3 or 4 inches wide at the leg hole rising to an apex about the same distance above - leading thoughts to the forbidden fruits within?

 

A friend and former colleague of mine set up an on-line retailer specialising in erotic underwear.  Perhaps she had been influenced by the sex shop near to where we both worked. Most of her customers were men, using her catalogue in the privacy of their own homes.  Her models were amateurs, her staff mainly, chosen to look like ordinary women, and herself.  'As you see, we sell a full range of panties - not just skimpy creations.  Thongs are popular, but full briefs and Vanity Fair knickers sell well too.'  Until she sold the firm, my friend had a fine business model, as well as a fine plus-size figure herself.

The popularity of small knickers took a big step forward in the early 1980s with thongs and even smaller G-strings.  Smaller knickers covering less of the cheeks had gradually been becoming increasingly popular, but thongs and G-strings were fundamentally different: they slip into the nick to stimulate the bum crevice and genitals.  I find that, perhaps because I keep my bum crevice shaven, that thongs made me rather sore, so I keep to full briefs and boy shorts unisex knickers.

 

Perhaps it was not a coincidence that thongs and G-strings became popular at about the same time as shaving.  Shaving increases the risk of a sore crevice but some shave because they prefer not to show their hair extending beyond their knickers, especially that at the top inside of their legs and other hair extending beyond their pubic triangle.  Others regard completely natural body hair as a feature of womanly beauty to be proud of - not just their hair in and bordering their panties but also on their abdomen, bordering their nipples, in fact everywhere it grows. 

 

The popularity of mini-skirts from the late 1960s had declined by the time that thongs became popular.

Thong or G-string?

 

Usually a thong is wider at both the sides and the back where it slips into the bum crevice but the distinction is not always made and so the terms 'thong' and 'G-string' are often used interchangeably.

A Personal Choice

I choose knickers to keep my outer clothes clean and for arousal.  I keep my foreskin back, lodged under the overhang of my knob end.  I wear white unisex fixation knickers (Abena Abri-Net Large and Allanda iD Expert Ultra large) with an Abri San 5 Premium pad, big enough to extend from my waist to the top of my bum crevice which allows me to rub my knob end and bum hole against the pad.  Usually I use only one pad per day.

 

I find that they tend to be tight around the boundary between the top of my leg and my pubic area and bum cheeks, so I buy a size larger than my waist measurement indicates (I am about 37-33-39).  They can be pulled up to my waist, when the sides are about 8 inches or rolled down to around 3 inches.

Since I was given some by a lady friend, nurse and knicker connoisseur, I have also been wearing unisex Abri Fix Pants super large 90693.  Like ladies' boy shorts, they have a cuff round each leg rather than a flat crotch, as do briefs.  They are made of thicker material than nets, which makes the pad hardly visible; the sides are about 9 inches deep when pulled up and can be rolled down to about 4 inches.
