Hi my husband and I have been married almost a year. I am 45 and he is 58. We have been having horrible fights which started when my mom was dying 6 months ago. I felt like he wasn't supportive enough because I didn't feel listened to. In addition to that I don't feel important to him because he won't share his work calendar with me which makes it impossible to plan for appointments and if child care issues arise. Any time I bring up an issue we get in a fight and he leaves the house. We are supposed to go to couples counseling in a couple of days and I am not sure if he will show up. I told him what he could say/do to help me feel listened to but he seems to not care anymore. I am in therapy for myself to deal with child abuse issues and also being cheated on by my kids' dad. I am able to take the responsibility for my part of the fights but he does not take any accountability for his. I feel the only reason why he wants to go to therapy is so the therapist can fix me. Very frustrated and need a safe place to vent and hear from anybody else who has dealt with a similar situation.
Just wondering if there is alcoholism somewhere in your own personal background.... a family member, sibling, or even a friend.
When I got into Al Anon, I began to learn to take care of myself and stop expecting others to be my happiness. I also learned how to draw boundaries in relationships and know what I could tolerate and what I couldn't.
It got my focus OFF of my husband and what he needed to fix. I can't change him. But I work on myself. And now I am happy most of the time.
Thank you.

I think my father had problems when he was younger. I had a grandfather that "drank". My mother hid that she drank for years. My brother drinks regularly. I binge drank for years. Not often but I did. Over the last two to three years, I have had a problem. Drink a bottle of wine almost daily. Not sure if this helps any. Just sharing.
