I am scheduled to have a hysterectomy feb 20. I have an enlarged fibroid as if I'm 20 weeks pregnant. I ended up in the hospital because I bleed so bad I had to have a blood transfusion. My blood was 4.5 and normal is 15. As of now I am at 9.6 and need to be at least 10 to have the surgery. This has got me down I'll need to take time off and I support myself. I am am glad to be alive though and I'm trying to stay positive. Also taking a birth control to stabilize bleeding. Anyone dealing with this or similar?
I know this is an old post. I am answering because I hoped you might still be active in this group. I am hoping that your procedure was successful in alleviating your symptoms.
I am having similar issues and facing related decisions and wanted to ask about your experience.
I have very large fibroids including penduncular fibroids (could limit treatment options). I don't have excessive bleeding or long periods, But I do have abdominal pain which is becoming worse and more frequent. It's not constant, but I didn't have it at all when I got my last ultrasound 3 years ago (I didn't really have any symptoms back then). I am also experiencing the belly distention that gives me a "pregnant" look, and the abdominal swelling is also physically uncomfortable. Maybe it's unrelated but I have also developed a ventral hernia which makes my abdomen stick out even more. I have to deal with the fibroids first however, because the hernia mesh needs to be put on after the surgery.
I am feeling more and more that I don't want a hysterectomy, even if I get to keep my ovaries and cervix (my concerns about keeping my ovaries are about keeping my hormones/lessening the impact on my sex life). I am 46 and I'm not willing to give up on sex as I currently experience it. I know there is a handful of alternative treatments for fibroids. I am considering all of them that I would be a candidate for, but I am afraid I might have to get a second opinion because my doctor has been pushing for me to get a hysterectomy 3 years ago. I am afraid she wouldn't sign off on a myomectomy for example. I really want to keep my parts. I also know that there are some treatments that wouldn't work for my situation. So I am scared about making the wrong choice.
So basically, I am curious about how your procedure went, how you're feeling, if you're feeling different. I hear all these "horror stories" about hysterectomies changing mood, eliminating sex drive, changing the way sex feels and just general emotional despondency. I would appreciate anything you could tell me about your hysterectomy and how it's affected you. Thanks in advance.
