Hi. My name is Max and I'm a liar. I lie to my wife constantly about everyday tings (saying I remember a past even when I really don't, etc...). I lie to her about irrelivant, unimportant things, and it's completely eroded her trust, and is destroying our relationship. I'm about to lose my life partner because I can't be honest about what I ate for breakfast. I'm trying to stop, but at this point this behaviour is so automatic, it's hard for me to catch it until it's too late.

Well, first thought is figure out why those lies come out of your mouth. Did you eat choc cake for breakfast and feel stupid about it? Are you afraid if you don't remember something you think you should, are you going to feel stupid about it? Or that you will be looked down upon for either of those things? If any of this feels familiar, maybe you need to decide who you are and who you want to be. Those are 2 different things. Take an inventory of your weaknesses and don't lie about them of try to hide them. You are who you are. Then decide who you want to be and make a plan of how to get there (therapy, classes, exercise, etc.) and work on getting there. All the while remembering who you are with no excuses, so you don't lie about them. It's like flipping a house. You buy this old piece of crap house, rip off all the ugly stuff, sometimes down to the frame, and piece by piece put new, better stuff back on, and eventually you have a nice new house (or self) that you can be proud of.

Thank you for your support. I'm currently working on identify why I lie. Next week I will focus on accepting who I really am. It's a frustrating experience for me, because I've known for a long time what I have to do, but failed to get it done. I've began to improve many times in the past, but I've always reverted back to my old habits. I plan to make this time different by participating in this community and working on my lying daily. I'm not going to give myself the excuse of saying "I'm good enough, I can stop working on myself now". I've made peace with the fact that this will most likely have to be a life-long project for me.

I re-read your reply tonight, and I want to thank you again. You've helped me figure out another important step in my strategy: figure out who I want to become and how to get there. Another person's perspective is always helpful.
