Hello all. My name is Michael and I am a liar. I lie about stuff that doesn't even matter. The last lie that I told was to my wife about a haircut. I told her I drove past the barber absent mindedly and didn't feel like turning around. In actuality, I stopped at the bank near the barber, got cash, saw that it was too crowded and left. She didn't even ask me about my hair and I felt the need to make up some story. I have had some counseling in the past and knew I should of said that I lied and immediately told the truth. That is REALLY hard to do. She checked the bank account the next morning and saw that I had withdrawn money near the barber and knew I had lied. We are currently very strained and she does not want to talk to me because she can't believe a word I say. This is just the tip of the iceberg and stems from infidelity on my part about 8 years ago. It has been an uphill battle ever since. I will do well for a while and then I relapse and one lie causes a tremendous backslide. I am at a loss for what to do now. I am reaching out for help from peers as I have found that professional therapists have not worked for me. Just looking for help. My wife says "just stop lying" but I hope you all realize that is easier said than done. Thanks for listening and I look forward to any advice.

Welcome. You will find a lot of support here. Just curious...why didn't counseling help? Share if you want. Perhaps the person you saw wasn't a good fit for you.

I shouldn't say counseling didn't help. It did provide me with some useful tools. For the most part though I was paying to sit down and talk and get no advice. I found the same information that I was given in self help books and psychology websites. I have used several different counselors and only found one that really helped. Unfortunately she moved out of state. There are things that can't be found in books and I am hoping that people on here will have experiences that I can learn from and use to better myself.

Gotcha...for me I had (have) a continued daily struggle not to lie. I had to hit close to rock bottom (being separated from my wife and kids) to realize that I need to them ahead of my need to lie in order to make myself seem more important or just to fit in. I'm reading The Power of Habit and it has provided some insight in how to create positive routines in my daily life. Do you feel that you have a strong support from a close friend?

I too have hit rock bottom. my girlfriend caught me in a bunch of lies, and every time I got back into a corner I lied about that stuff to cover up other lies. I told her nobody wants to say here's the hundred horrible things I've done will you be proud of me? insteadI built myself up to make myself feel better and I felt justified.I don't want to be this horrible person anymore, and I just can't help myself sometimes. but the problem is, when I look in the mirror I hate the person I'm looking at. I can barely sleep over the shame I feel from the things I've done in my past, from the lies I tell to cover them up. I just know I don't want to be that person anymore. why is it so much easier to just lie? when I hear myself lying, I think did I really just say that? when it's hard to remember lies like the other lies to cover up other lies to cover up other lies.when I told her why I was lying, she only got angry which is legitimate. I want to change I just don't know how. the stress I cause myself is too much sometimes

The desire to change is half the battle. The other half is effort and support. Do you feel that your girlfriend would support you if you sought out professional help? Hopefully she can respect and love you more for wanting to get help. If she is the person you would want to marry, you would want to have a clean slate.

yes. she is the one I would want to marry, but that you're talking to me. I'm new at this thread so I don't really know what's going on yet

I'm sorry I know you weren't talking to me after thinking about it and looking at it. I'm sorry.
