Liars Anonymous Community Group
A support group to provide those with a compulsive addiction to lie a place to share hope, strength and courage with others like them; solve our common problem and help others with a compulsion to lie. We aren't alone!
I’m new to this whole process also and have been in the habit of lying to make myself look better or to avoid repercussions for years. I looked at 12 step programs that apply to lying and found that steps 4 and 5 helped with regret and guilt. We may not be able to wrong every right, but by honestly searching and admitting our faults to ourselves, we can come to forgive ourselves and that will go a long way to freeing us from guilt. Step 8 says to make a list of everyone we have harmed and make amends. Personally, for me that would be impossible, for how do I track down each of those people, or even remember all of my wrongs. I am working on making amends to those who mean the most to me and who care for me, my wife, our children, very close friends. And I am not using words, because they know my words have hurt them in the past. Now is the time to chose actions and behavior. Each time I show them I am working to change, I feel a little better about myself. Each time I am honest, I am freer from guilt and regret. It will not be a short, quick process for me. I have years of hurt and mistrust to undo; it will take time for those hurts to heal and for me to regain their trust, but like any valuable goal, it will be worth it over time. Set a goal for yourself to make amends, create a plan to work on it, and take steps to follow through. You will find that each step will make you freer. A wiser man than me once said, “The truth will set you free.”
