Another thing that helps is to think of my faith and religion. It teaches that I should be truthful. Of course, religion is very personal, and I respect your choice to either believe in something or not. But if you do, hold tight to it.
I know I'm not expected to be perfect and I'm loved in spite of my flaws, but because I believe, I want to try to do my best for love of my God and in service to Him.
As I said, faith is your very personal choice, and I am definitely in no position to preach, but I do encourage you to ascribe to a set of principles or something that can help hold you accountable. My father was an alcoholic and I know in AA, many ascribed to god as simply an abbreviation for good orderly direction.
Hope that makes sense and helps at least maybe a little.
