Six years ago, I too was held at gunpoint, though in a home invasion. I won't go into any more detail than that, but that was a defining milestone in my life and things turned upside down for me after that event. I made two mistakes that nearly destroyed me. First is that I shut everything down, I didn't want to feel any thing. What I mean by this was, I didn't want to feel any negative emotions. I learned years later that by repressing these emotions we do real damage to ourselves later. Also, when we repress things like sadness, we repress joy. We can't just turn the switch off one emotion without turning everything else off. Second, I let rage and anger drive me. I was relentless and self-destructive. Everything came to a head in 2013 and I was left feeling worst than I did in 2009. With that said, I can empathize with you and how you must have felt last night.
Between the end of 2013 until later in 2014, I didn't have a job. It was a truly demoralizing time. I looked and applied, looked and applied, looked and applied. It took a while but I did find something. My biggest problem was not asking for enough help. My pride and arrogance made me think that I HAD to do everything alone or I wasn't a man. Very flawed thinking. I suffered and made those around me suffer while I was spiraling downward.
In regards to ex-girlfriends. I was fortunate in the fact that my ex-girlfriend was supportive, but I still had skeletons in the closet and could not be completely honest with her, which eventually led to our breakup. I agree with what NeedToGrow says, in that we can't control how others feel about us, the only thing we can control is our actions.
Life isn't always pretty, but I learned that the majority of the times it wasn't resulted from my actions of being dishonest, selfish, arrogant, and cowardly. No one forces us to act the way we do. Whether we choose to believe it or not, we are all in control of our choices and actions. I chose to lie to my ex-girlfriend and the result of that is that she broke up with me. Nothing I do now will change that fact. As much as I want, I can't force her to be with me, no matter how much I love her. Yet, we cannot anchor our self worth on how others think of us. TH=he saying is true, we need to be loving towards ourselves before we can truly love others.
The last two months have been a truly amazing learning experience for me. I truly believe now that God only puts things in our path that he knows we can overcome, but we must be willing to rise to the occasion. To quote Batman Begins, "Why do we fall? It's so we learn how to pick ourselves back up again." We are all here to support you, but you have to take that first step yourself. Hope this helps a little.
