DHS is a broken and ignorant system.....three foster care workers in 2 months, and a child's caseworker that keeps telling me that I need to feel sorry for and cater to the childrens mother who they are making out to be the victim in all of this. I know I do not sound compasionate toward my sweet and lovely neices and newphew's mother, but the mother is jumping through hoops right now becuase this is the first time her kids have been taken away, but not the first time she has been in trouble for drugs, and lord knows what else. I am very protective of all of my kids (I have two of my own), and it is soul crushing to see dhs speeding through the process of sending them home, and they are going right back to the situation that they came from, but dhs does not see it. The only people who suffer here are the kids, they are thriving here with us and have the stablity that they have never had before, my husband and I give everything we have and are to our kids, we are always at some sports practice, meet, or game, school event, keeping all the kids involved with the community. They will not have that when they go back, they will not have stablity, or a responsible adult who will just let the older two just be kids. I have a meeting with the children's case worker, the supreviser of the case worker, the children's mother because the case worker does not feel we are on the same page in helping with reunification. I do not like confrontation and have no idea how this meeting is going to go, and I feel like I will be made out to be the bad guy in all of this, because I do not feel the mother is ready to take care of these three kids yet if ever. My husband and I have been so fustrated with the way this whole thing has gone, and we question our choice to get involved with this everyday here lately, we love the kids and would keep them forever if we could, but I can not handle dealing with their mother. My husband is related to the older two children's father by marriage, so we did not know what we were getting into becuase my husband's step brother dropped off the face of the earth after we got the kids, and so now we are left to deal with his baby momma, and all of her craziness, and dhs is feeding into all of it. Any other kinship care folks out there dealing with a similar situation?
How do the kids feel? Our older ones are stuck on returning even though they can openly admit how bad things were and that things aren't 100%. The little one has completely shifted from wanting mom and dad constantly to not wanting to go on the weekends anymore and wanting to stay with us- sucks cause we have no choice.
It is totally frustrating to feel like everything is at the benefit or the expense of the kids. We feel like the parents have coached the older ones to not share anything now that the option of changing the plan from reunification to custody and guardianship is much more real.
