WWYD? Remicade or Surgery?

have a choice to make, do I start Remicade, as the last resort medication for my UC, or do I just go for surgery and get the colon removal and j-pouch?
Please give me your thoughts. I have been through Humira, and all of the meds before that, 6-mp, prednisone, azathioprine etc. I had some success, but it didn't out wiegh the side effects.
I'm looking for advice from people who have been where I'm at...
Thanks, Katie

I got my j-pouch last June and my quality of life has greatly improved. Saying that I would try the Remicade. You don't want any "what ifs". When I was recovering from my surgery there was times that I wondered if I did the right thing and that was even after I exhausted my every option. Even now my BM are more frequent and I have set backs from time to time. The j-pouch is not perfect but it has greatly improved my quality of life. If you do decide to try the Remicade I hope it works well for you and puts you in remission.

I was really nervous to have surgery and I wouldn't of felt good about it until I had tried all of my options. So I tried Remicade for 6 months and it didn't help at all.The only side effect I had was hair loss. So I finally had surgery and got a J-pouch. I am so so happy I did. It has been two years and I feel excellent!! sometimes I forget that I was ever sick!! I know surgery is really scary and you are nervous about what your life will be like afterwards but if I would of known that I would feel so good. I would of had surgery the first time I realized the drugs didn't help. Good luck with everything!

Hi everyone, I haven't posted in awhile. I'm back on Humira. I'm giving it 8 more weeks to see what it can do for me. My doctor seems to think that Remicade doesn't have much of a chance to work for me because of it's similarity to Humira. So if the Humira doesn't work , then I'm not sure if my doctor will try me on the Remicade or not. At this point, I'm a little tired of thinking about it. All I know is, I'm still having cramping, diarreah, and sudden urgency at any time my body decides to mess with me, so surgery as an option is looking scary but like some kind of hope for me.

hi i too was on remicade but had devastating sideeffects. the bleeding became so bad i couldn't leave the house anymore. i saw the surgeon on tuesday and friday he took my colon. the surgery really wasn't painful especially the first one. the second one gave me problems but that was because of my stoma not working. the takedown surgery was absolutely nothing. my only problem now is eating. i am so afraid of causing problems with the pouch that i live on practically nothing. i try every day to eat a little more and some days it works and some days it doesn't. but as far as the surgery that was the least of my problems. hope humira works and take care.
