Probiotics reducing chances for pouchitis??
Surfingoc8
Hey everyone,
I just recently made it home from my second stage surgery and now am rockin the internal j-pouch!! Surgery went awesome and I can honestly say I've never felt this great in nearly the 3 years of having UC. Its like my body has finally had all the bad removed and it can now stop fighting after struggling for so long. I did talk to my GI doc and he made a suggestion about taking probiotics like VSL#3 to help reduce the chances of pouchitis after surgery. Was wondering if anyone here has heard about this or continues to take probiotics.
Don't get me wrong it makes total sense to take probiotics after such major surgery especially now that much of the colon has been removed and the intestines have to adjust to their new role. Making sure the good bacteria is there can only help in this recovery.
Thanks,
B

I'm taking probiotics now (its been about 3 weeks since my takedown). I think they are helping, but I'm not sure. I'm on the culturelle stuff but I'd be interested to know if you think another probiotic would be better.

I'm about at the same point as you, about 4 weeks since my takedown, and I've been taking probiotics daily. Like you, I can't tell if they are working at all but I'm assuming they are. My GI recommended taking VSL#3 which is what I've been on for a while even before having the surgeries. My one problem with it is, it's a little expensive for a month's worth supply.

hello...yes, probiotics rock for keeping the good bacteria happy in the gut. I had surgery for j-pouch in 2001 and battled a few rounds of pouchitis in the couple years following surgery. I then started with a probiotic supplement that I take daily for many years now. I still deal with an occasional stomach riot but have avoided pouchitis for 6 years or so. keep the faith and power to you. mark
