Job anxiety Community Group
For people who suffer anxiety at the work place and fear co-workers, bosses, and who assume the worst will happen
Hello everyone!
I just joined this wonderful support group and from what I can tell you all are experienced in the working environment and know enough to guide me through this.
So long story short is that I graduated from business school with a degree in economics. Almost three years ago and since then I've been searching for a new job. As a requirement for my graduation I had to take a mandatory two months training at a bank but the HR hated me for being forced upon her so she would always treat like badly and try to make me look stupid infront of the staff. So I would go home every day feeling stressed out and miserable because I didn't understand why is she so rude to me. After I completed my training I walked out of their door and never looked back again. So I stayed unemployed for a while and where I come from people always hire their friends and family which leaves the rest of us struggling to find a decent job. Thus, I never got hired to work for a job related to my degree and I feel devestated and scared because I dont know anything else! I don't know anything about media or marketing or sales or accounting so I'm scared because I feel like I'm ruined! After months of unemployment I landed a job in the HR department and in the interview they promised me so many things like proper training among other things..well...I accepted even though I was nervous! And guess what? They didn't fulfill their promise! I would be left all day unsupervised and untrained not knowing what to do or how to do things and that stressed me out even more! It was a small office and the manager was never around he would come to office at the end of the day since his dad is the owner and he was really young and clueless about my position they really did not know what are the duties of an HR person. Google helped me a lot but google is not enough I needed a proper training on top of that I would receive phone calls in the middle of the night even though I would state my discomfort and disagreement on that matter! I just had to quit even though I need money to live. Now I have developed this fear of work and I get scared knowing that I have to do something I never studied and these people think that I should know everything about everything just because I'm holding a degree. I'm scared that I would fail at my tasks and that I would quit or get stressed out because I'm already suffering from depression and I'm already having selfesteem issues and I don't have a support system at home, no one cares about my problems...they think I'm lazy and they don't understand that because of what I've been through I'm feeling like the world is very difficult to mingle with. My whole life was just studying and school and now that it's time to start a career I don't seem to be able to get a job and hold on to it! I give up easily! Quitting is always an open option for me and I hate that! I don't know what to do I'm scared to get a job I feel like people are just nasty and mean and think I'm stupid and can't get things right! My career lasted for five months as an HR..I don't have any other experiences! That's not normal. Please guide me.
You described my life. I'm sorry I don't know how to support you. It's unfair that you can't get a job and it's very difficult. Please don't blame yourself.
You wrote, "I would be left all day unsupervised and untrained not knowing what to do or how to do things and that stressed me out even more." I have a family member working for me who said something similar, so here's the other side. The boss may have a variety of jobs and tasks. While its ideal to provide clear and detailed instructions, sometimes other things take priority and the expectation is that the employee will, at least should, figure it out.
Particularly if the work is not overwhelming use the time to get into and figure out the task.
I read a good book about a woman who became a champion poker player. (The biggest Bluff) What's the goal in poker, the same as in life, make good decisions. You will have good and bad luck, and your task is to maximize your chances and make good choices, though sometimes in poker as in life, things may not work out in the short run.
