For those of you embarking on using donor eggs, especially those with an older spouse (or sperm donor), please consider taking some time to look carefully at the background of your spouse's family for any signs of autism or autistic like behaviors. My husband and I got pregnant with donor eggs several years ago, and we were so focused on all the genetic testing for things like Cystic Fibrosis and Downs Syndrome, that we never once stopped to consider the risk of autism. Most egg donors are very young, but it has been proven that there is a link between autism and the age of the father, not the mother. We ended up having boy/girl twins and, right before they turned two, our son was diagnosed with autism. Once we started researching, we realized that my husband's age (45 when the kids were born) and his family history (nephew never diagnosed but always exhibited autistic like behaviors) were huge red flags. I think, had we known this predisposition existed, we would have likely pushed for gender testing (girls are less likely to be autistic and, in fact, our daughter is neuro typical) and also would have likely only transferred one embryo. We absolutely love our son but folks, autism is HARD, and raising a child with autism can tear you apart. I remember talking with my husband and we were both adamant that if our ultrasounds ever showed a child with a disability we would terminate the pregnancy. We knew that we simply did not want to parent a child with special needs. In our case, we ended up having no choice and honestly, our son is fairly mildly affected. However, I encourage you to think about your spouse's history and age, and talk with your RE about autism risks. Best of luck to you all in your journeys.
