I moved to Canada about 9 months ago. To change everything about who I was. I had family in this country, and I was finally ready to go back to school.
Before I moved to Canada, I had an eye checkup, where the doctor told me I had the warning signs of Glaucoma, as my nerves were showing to be pressured. They never suspected that I had IIH.
About 3 weeks ago, my right eye was bulging and causing me some pain. I went to my school's health services to have it looked at, and she sent me to the emergency room. That emergency room sent me to some neuros at a different hospital. The bulging eye was a symptom of IIH. I was given a lumbar puncture, and my pressure was at 43! They brought it down to 12, sent me home, and prescribed me some Diamox.
Two days later, my left eye hurt, my head was exploding and I had blurred/double vision. Again, I went back to emerg, and they gave me an LP, my pressure had built back up to 22. They then tripped my dose of Diamox, putting me at 1500mg/day. Which worked, for about another day. They told me to come back if I felt any worse.
I went back to emerg to see the Neuros a 3rd time. They refused me another LP, shot me with morphine for temporary relief. They did an MRI, which showed no blockages. Refereed me to the Neuro Patho, and told me not to come back unless I became completely blind in either eye.
I met with the Neuro Patho, who told me my optic discs were still swollen, and recommended I have a shunt surgery. A VA shunt, as my heart is super healthy. He referred me to the Neruo Surgeon, who will be performing my shunt surgery.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't terrified.
