I'm working with Voc Rehab to get work, at least part time, and have been for awhile. The person I'm working with knows that I have a hearing impairment(I'm close to 60% right now) and he has hearing aids that he doesn't wear. The problem is he will only speak loud enough to me if my girlfriend isn't with me, if she is then he speaks softly, then she repeats what he says. It's really frustrating and he has been reminded of this in the past about speaking up. I don't expect him to shout, but he could speak louder. He has given me his bosses phone number in the past should I wish to file a complaint about anything. Should I call his boss because this keeps happening or should I just keep pushing him, even though it never works?
I wl say, first to try to find out why he is doing that. The older generation (me) was taught not to raise your voice at hearing or deaf ppl. If he thinks he is doing you a favor when you are by yourself, but then when your gal is with you he lowers his voice because he then figures it is her job to speak to you.
I fell into that. Don't do it. It will become a habit and you will really need to depend on her. Use your ears as long as you can. If he refuses to change his ways then I wld think you had no choice. GOOD LUCK
DEBBIE IS PROBABLY RIGHT, ALTHOUGH SPEAKING FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TABLE, I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY VOICE NOT CARRYING VERY WELL. I HAVE A VERY HARD TIME SPEAKING LOUD ENOUGH FOR SOME PEOPLE TO HEAR ME. HE MUST NOT HAVE THAT ISSUE SINCE HE SPEAKS LOUD ENOUGH WHEN THE TWO OF YOU ARE ALONE. BUT, I ALSO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH SPEAKING UP WHEN IN THE COMPANY OF MORE THAN ONE OR TWO PEOPLE. COULD BE A LACK OF CONFIDENCE IN MYSELF, LIKE I THINK WHAT I HAVE TO SAY IS NOT IMPORTANT OR WILL COME OUT SOUNDING STUPID. SO I EITHER DON'T TALK AT ALL OR I KEEP MY VOICE LOW SO THAT ONLY THE PERSON CLOSEST TO ME CAN HEAR ME. GUESS WHAT I'M GETTING AT IS THAT HE MAY BE UNCOMFORTABLE AROUND YOUR GIRL FRIEND FOR SOME REASON. PERHAPS YOU COULD BRING IT UP, LET HIM KNOW (AGAIN) THAT YOU NEED HIM TO SPEAK UP EVEN WHEN SHE IS THERE AND IF HE HAS A PROBLEM WITH THAT THEN YOU WANT TO WORK WITH SOMEONE ELSE.
You have to be happy with your vocational rep. If you aren't, you are going to have problems working together. Sit down and talk about it and ask the supervisor to be present to see if they can work something out where you are happy. If they cannot, ask for a change in counselors. I've been in your situation. It is hard when you want to be viewed as cooperative.
from what I have noticed is that ppl who work in business settings seem to talk quietly. Guess it is the office situations. I need to hear the voice but for me it is clearness that counts. Which is it for you, being to loud or clear. But he only speaks loud when your alone, sounds as if HE depends on your gf.

JUST A THOUGHT.
