Is the heart only capable of loving again only when we give ourselves permission? The recent ruling by the Supreme Court sure spurred some conversation about love.
Last October, my 21 and 22 year old sons became fathers. I wasn't pleased. Their dads cancer happened in their first year of college. They both dropped out. I tried to be understanding and give them room to grieve but move on with life at the same time. I don't think they tried to become Dad's. Maybe they did. When my grandkids were born, I missed my late husband and it was trying to experience the moment with joy. Very tough. We hadn't made it to 2 years yet. Well, I love all babies. All. But, these 2 are special. And I can't explain it other than the way their faces light up when they see me. Or the way they grab my face and give me kisses. Or my grand daughters smart little attitude and sass (she knows I see it and she gets a HUGE grin!) My grand son just laughs at me when I'm doing nothing. He is the most serious baby but for some reason he finds my existence funny. In a way, these 2 helped me open my heart to love again.
Soon after they were born, I began dating again and decided to open my heart up to love. I met somebody and soon fell head over heels in love with him. I can't imagine my life without him and wish we were living together. I'd like to see him every single day. My 16 year old daughter is against any more changes. Dad's death, brothers marrying and new babies within 2 years was enough for her.
So, I sit and wonder what the nations attitude will be toward same sex marriage in 5 years. I wonder if I will be with this man 5 years from now. I wonder if the power to love is within our grasp when we exercise the power to choose to love. What do you think?
