I had many reasons - seeing the videos of the vets war experiences, remembering my late father-in-law who served in the Austrailian Army and was in Darwin when it was bombed by the Japanese, hearing so many times about the men who gave the ultimate sacrifice. I cried because of how the contribution of the women was too frequently downplayed or forgotten altogether. I cried most of all because of the many times I didn't attend these services with my husband although he wanted to. I cried because of how proud I was of my son for taking part as a Royal Canadian Air Cadet, yet his father never saw him in uniform, never got to see him growing into a fine young man.
Still, I cried.
Strangely, I'm happy I still have tears. It reminds me that I loved, and was loved. That I still miss him, and always will, despite moving forward.
