HOPEFUL HEARTS...LIVING AGAIN AFTER THE LOSS Community Group
We are a group of people who have grieved the loss of a spouse, partner, or lover and are searching for a life without our mate. Some looking for their own identity as an individual or finding a life for themself. Some looking for companionship or a serious relationship with someone new. And some just feeling lost and unsure. We offer encouragement, support and virtual...
Going to Meet Up this weekend to learn to kayak - two weeks ago, it was pickle making class. I'm on a roll ( with really good pickles on it), if I must say so myself, and I guess I do.
One small step for us....hopefully no giant leap for those pesty unicorns?????
My friend went yesterday and he ate so much, he said he felt sick. I did so much walking and sweating, I had to keep myself hydrated.
Sorry, boring I know.
I've been widowed since 9/09 and moved into a new home and "retired" 5/10. For the first year I stayed at home and didn't get out much unless someone called me, which wasn't very often as I don't really have any friends in my new town who aren't otherwise occupied with jobs and family. I did do some traveling to see family, but that was really my only escape. One day I thought the walls were literally closing in on me. So I got dressed in my "big girl clothes" and headed out the door....first, dinner alone, then, oh my, oh my, how could I dare a movie alone. And you know, it wasn't nearly as scary as my pounding heart was telling me it was. Every time I venture out now, my anxiety level isn't nearly as high as it once was (it is still there though) and low and behold I've managed to check quite a few things off my bucket list. I even managed an Alaskan cruise and a trip to San Francisco solo last summer when it was 115 degrees here at home. I've come out of my shell somewhat and can carry on a conversation with people I've never met. The world is full of interesting people. The one thing I have learned about all of my solo outings is....I don't care about the stares I get from strangers or what their opinions are of me...I've got things to do. I love rainbows too, and maybe someday I will run into a unicorn as well.
It is fun to being with a girlfriend, or a friend, but sometimes my accommodating personality gets too preoccupied with making them feel good, my interests get marginalized.
Balance is important, doing things with someone is good, and doing things on your own is vital.
I used to be too shy, I learned to overcome that impediment long time ago.
I actually enjoy being alone a new nice restaurant, this way I get to know people because I pay attention to my environment more without chatting with my companion, I learn about food, atmosphere through my lenses unaffected by other opinion. I know, it sounds strange, but I like to explore, form my own opinion, and than share that experience and go there with friends or my son.
Good luck exploring the world around us, my friends. It is what you make out of it.
