Thank you for posting this. I am terrible about standing up for myself and will do almost anything to avoid confrontation. My husband was the same way for the most part. So, here is how I handled a recent situation with a handyman. I hired him to fix my front door. He came, assessed the job, went to the hardware store and bought what he needed, came back and fixed the door and presented me with the bill for the parts. His labor was reasonable and I was happy with the work. So I felt like I had a handyman I could call on from time to time as the need arose and I was honest with him on that visit and told him I was a widow and would probably need some things done from time to time to keep the house up. So, I called him a second time to repair 2 kitchen screens. He didn't come right away but had said he would call when he was coming over. He didn't and showed up when I was not home. I emailed him and he returned a second time without calling first and I just happened to arrive home as he was knocking on my door. He took the screens to a local hardware store. He brought them back a few days later and said the bill was 48 bucks. I was shocked but paid it. He did not present me with a bill. I felt silly for even having called him as I could easily have done this myself but I had a pre-senior moment and thought it was some big involved process. Anyway after he left I called the hardware store and asked what the repair costs were and it totaled less than 10 bucks, so he charged me plenty for his few minutes of time. The hardware store is 4 blocks from me so gas should not have been a factor. I paid him, took his card off the fridge and deleted his number from my cell. I did not confront him as I should have or asked questions about the bill, etc. But I figured he showed me who he was and I know that is not the type of person I want. Your post inspired me to do better next time and find my voice. Again, thanks for sharing.
