Everywhere I turn lately I am hearing about meditation. I sure would like to try it. Anyone have any suggestions on where to start?

My beginning was 5 minutes, just saying my name over and over again in my head. I quickly learned that even though I was supposed to have only one thought, a bunch of other thoughts were happening. Not very helpful thoughts either. I progressed to 20 minutes, focusing on my breathing and body sensations or scripture. I can now stop thoughts when I meditate and return to my focus. It's weird how it works. I'm still learning. I can't meditate with other people around or TV noise, but a dog bark or cat meow or train whistle is fine. I think it has to do with me worrying about what others are thinking about me.
