Digestion issues seems to be a common theme for many. Most ppl have digestion issues and don't even know it.
If you are deficient in vitamins, suffer from GERD/acid reflux, IBS, Crones, Diverticulosis, Celeic, or a autoimmune issue......it is more than likely you have a malabsorbtion/digestion issue.
If you have bad digestion.....it makes for a very unhappy body/mind/ and mood.
Most doctors will tell you that GERD/acid reflux is becuz you have TOO MUCH acid when in fact you don't have enough. The valve between the stomach and esophagus become inflamed and can not close all the way. When you don't have enough acid, you can NOT digest your food and vital vitamins can not be absorbed. Therefore the food sits in your stomach and kinda fermentates causing irritation of the valve leading to your esophagus and back washes into the esophagus causing heartburn.
As you age (after the age of 25), you produce less stomach acid and with a poor diet ladened with high carbs, GMO's, and fast food/prepackaged foods......you WILL eventually develope digestive and other health issues.
Luckily our bodies are pretty forgiving, but struggle to stay in balance by robbing what it needs from your bones and other areas of your body.
Now that it is summer in North America, gardens are a plenty......and so are farmers markets.......get ya'll greens and other veggies.
As one doctor said to me...."shut up and eat your greens!!!" LOL
I have several digestive issues, so I am limited on my greens and some fruits.....no dairy......and no gluten.....no sugar.......no coffee.
This is a direct result of poor diet.....multiple eating disorders......and insufficient amounts of sleep over the years.
I have since made many changes for the better. I was told it may take 3 years to straighten out my digestion.....and up to 5 years to heal my liver. I'm 57, so there is a ton of damage to correct.
I am 7 months into healing and am feeling much better. It has been 2 steps forward and 1 step back most of the time.
I've had 2 great week (knock on wood) and I hang onto the good days and muddle through the difficult ones and keep telling myself that I will heal, but it needs time and TLC (not the tv channel...lol).
I've done tons of research and didn't realize how much our digestive system endures. Everything we smell, taste, eat, put on our skin has to be processed by our liver. Most livers are over taxed with over 500 different tasks it performs simultaneously all day....every day.
Give your liver a break and feed it as many nutrient rich foods such as those greens....especially the bitter ones (broccoli, kale, spinach, chard, dandolion greens, etc)
Also, giving your digestion a break by going at least 4 to 6 hours between eating. Eating soups, smoothies, and bone broths give your digestion and liver a break in having to work to break down foods that are solid.
We really don't require that much protein as once thought. However, it depends on the person and how active they are....so always check with your doctor or a dietitian for your particular requirements.
Make sure you chew all your food thoroughly to release enzymes and nutrients.
Another thing......don't eat fruit with your meals. Always eat fruit inbetween meals on an empty stomach. Fruits and protein, and veggies all require differnt levels of acid in the stomach and your stomach can only deal with one thing at a time and will always pick the complex stuff to break down....therefore, the fruit will sit in your stomach too long and cause indigestion or enter the small intestine undigested and rot which can cause SIBO (small intestine bactieria overgrowth) and parasites.
Our foods are depeleted of essential nutrients and IMO...good quality supplements are very important in a daily regimine especially if you lead a hectic lifestyle. Again, check with your doctor.
Make sure you drink plenty of good quality water. Exercise at least 4 to 5 times a week (walking is excellent).
Grow as much of your own food as you can and always use natural pesticides.
Take care everyone. If you have any questions.....I'll share what I know and you can check it out with a doctor (I prefer a dietitian myself.....but that is just me as most doctors don't have much knowledge about nutritican or supplements).
Ok.....as the doctor told me...."shut up and eat your greens....your stomach, liver, pancrease, gall bladder, and intestines will thank you"
No gluten,
No coffee,
No dairy??????
Okay..... Just shoot me now.
My dads 84, TODAY is his birthday.
My grandpa lived to 87.
My great grandpa to 86. His brothers, 5 of them. Lived older than he, up to 108.
They all ate their daily bread.... cheese, coffee, and topped it off with a slice of cake or some other sweet.
My biggest weakness is..... Bread. Lordy, do I like good homemade breads.
But.... Your right, people over indulge.
Sugar has got to be the worst. Specially white sugar. I can live without sweets. Coffee.... I've read have great benefits. Its the caffeine that's bad. Dairy? Don't even think about taking my Grilled cheese sandwhich on homemade sour dough away!
As far as I know, I have decent digestion.
That's a good Post right up MsBlank. Anyone with issues should make changes.
So far, I don't have those issues. If I did.... I might as well jump off a cliff. A five foot cliff..... Then go eat a big piece of lasagna with toasted garlic bread. And an after supper espresso.
;)))
My diet of no dairy, gluten, sugar, and coffee elimination has helped emmensely.
Food is not the way it was back in the day (before the late 60's when the government started messing with our food).
My weakness is also bread, butter, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried everything (my dad was from the south)........my grammas homemade hot rolls with gravy!!!!
Pizza......pasta.....I had a steady diet of all that and then some.
However, I finally blew out my digestive system and the only way to heal it is through elimination and then reintroduce it one by one.
However, I think I won't go back to dairy and gluten (sprouted bread I will do though and only if my stomach will take it and digest it).
My health nutritianist says some of the stuff is only temporary until I heal.
I have plenty of great stuff I can eat and I am trying new things that I never thought would taste good :)
Now that I have eliminated sugar with the exception of organic unpasturized local honey (just a little)......I don't miss it.
The thing is Seamus......you can get away with eating all the stuff you want......now, but like I said before......it might come back to roost seeing as our food isn't pure any more.
White flour is just as poisonous as white sugar.
I'm just sayin!
So.... I'll stick to whole wheat.
And I'm not giving you a bad time, honest. I just know that..... Life without bread and cheese, is like a fish without fins.
I can give up the sweets. No problem!
Probiotics can help with gut problems along with yogurt my dad swears by it.
@Seamus happy birthday to your dad
I was taking a regular good quality probiotic, but was not digesting it properly and it didn't have everything I needed to help heal my gut issues. I recently changed to a soil based probiotic (SBO) which is more effective. Who knew that consuming dirt...in capsule form no less.....would be the new rage!!! LoL
Best to MsBlank!
I'd like to say a happy belated b-day to Seamus' dad as well. Longevity is a great blessing! Good day to all & hugs! <3
