Have you ever seen a painting and found yourself drawn into the artist's mind, and had that feeling you felt what he did when he painted it? You know that sudden indescribible feeling that in a single second you knew what it was, yet were unable to describe it in words?
I felt that way with this painting by Casper David Friedrich:

This yearning to be outside, and wondering about this feeling for the longest time. And everytime I would want to discuss this someone who I thought would relate, I got this "BFD-attitude" in return, which was frustrating, until the day I finally found someone who could explain that feeling that draws you outside.
I like to spend time alone like Casper (self portrait) in this painting, who was undoubtedly a HSP, but was never able to accurately describe the urge for this need. In group therapy, one woman felt sorry for me saying, "I feel sorry for you - you are always so lonely." I laughed and said, "No, I am not. Yes, I am alone very much. But that is not lonely. There is a difference between being alone and being lonely." It was a completely foreign concept for her, as she did not seem to know the difference between the two.

In my case I don't know that I necessarily identify with the artist, but I definitely identify with the main figure in the painting.

Now I know story behind this painting. It's from the The Tempest by Shakespeare. Yet I didn't know the story when I first saw the painting.
I see this woman, standing in the midst of the glorious fury of a storm. I too love nature. And two of the most awesome aspects of nature in my opinion are storms and the ocean. I grew up near the ocean, but haven't lived near it in years. But there is an added component to the painting of course, the ship. I'm not sure here, depending on my mood I imagine different scenarios for the ship. Sometimes I think that someone the woman loves dearly is on that ship and she is watching helplessly. Sometimes I think that she is simply watching, feeling concern for the people on the ship, but yet still feeling the power of the storm. Sometimes I feel like the ship is simply part of the ocean and the storm. Sometimes I think the ship is more symbolic, like it is our world, caught up in the storm of human nature--all the good, evil, and everything mixed in between.
Either way I really identify with this painting.
