All I can do is when I do see family is smile, ignore their comments and I say to myself -I will take the high road,,and they can take the low road. No matter what,, I tell myself,,,they cant knock me down unless I let them..it is hard though.
I don't worry about holidays and get-togethers anymore. We see our son and daughter-in-law either before the holidays or after. We have told them that they should have their family celebrations in their own house on the day of the holiday. (We had to travel on these days years ago with the kids and I hated interrupting their holiday time home) so we would not force this on our son and daughter-in-law. (I lost my daughter years ago so I did mourn over the loss of everything associated with celebrations, etc. I cannot change that so I have accepted that).
I just love to spend time alone. I relax. There was even one year when we visited our son over the Christmas holiday and since we were going there, we didn't even bother to put up a Christmas tree. (And you know what, I didn't even miss it!). I didn't even watch tv much because I was sick-and-tired of seeing Christmas advertising/commercials non-stop. So, I found other things to do. Got through that holiday season easily.
I'm not saying that I didn't ever miss holiday celebrations, I did. But, as with anything in Life, things change and I have learned to go with the flow and accept it.
I will probably be working in the health-care field by then as a phlebotomist/lab tech. So, I will probably have to work on Thanksgiving and Christmas. My husband is ok with that and so am I. Health problems don't take time off for the holidays.
Lonewolf - you must go where you are fully accepted and understood. I know that family is important. Yet, there comes a time when you must fully learn to take care of yourself first and foremost. Celebrate in the way that is most comfortable for you. Do not let others make that decision for you. I know that your family doesn't approve but do you? Do you approve of yourself and your beliefs? That is what is most important.
