Highly Sensitive People HSP Community Group
The highly sensitive person (or HSP) is someone who cares deeply about everything ... feels emotions with great intensity ... is highly conscientious ... has a rich and complex inner life ... is very intuitive ... is often creative in a variety of ways... is easily overwhelmed and/or overstimulated. A HSP needs lots of quiet time, space, and freedom. If this sounds...

How people react to things is in part due to entrainment... how much the person has been exposed to similar stimuli. We become less reactive to the effects of a stimuli on the surface the longer we are exposed. For example, a friend and I who both worked in nursing homes must remind ourselves not to talk freely about the appearance of our aging parents' bowels. Similarly, I must remind myself that my 11 year-old's incessant gunfire sound effects while I am driving him home from school are not meant to bother me.
Another factor of influence is association. There are a few things I know bother me way more than others and I must bear this in mind to choose how to deal with encountering those things and to choose how to deal with judgement regarding my reactions. I had food poisoning so severely after eating at a particular restaurant 25 years ago, I still become nauseated at the sight of it. I used to be be nauseated at the mention of it. I tolerate driving within view of it, but as the smell still triggers a gag reflex, I ask my family and friends to avoid eating it near me or inviting me into a space where it has been recently consumed. They thought I was overreacting at first. However, I offered and followed through with recounting the fine details of my food-poisoning everytime they subjected me to the experience such that the negative association was enough to deter their insensitivity. If your family wants to watch those movies, don't make a big deal of it; just quietly make other plans to go see a movie you'll enjoy or put on noise-cancelling headphones with a sound jack and watch a movie on a mobile device. If they try to suggest you don't want to be with them etc, flip it right back around on them. They do not have to understand to respect you.
