Well I'm 33 gonna be married for 12 years with 3 kids, one which has ODD, and been doing counseling for her and with the family, and changing medications a lot. My marriage has been rocky since day 1, we have no trust, no communication, no respect for each other. And when your trying to raise 3 kids well then they start not having respect and their own issues that come from the marriage. I came from a good home, parents together no abuse, no fighting, a lot of love. My husband came from a broken home, was kicked out of school at 16, in jail by the time he was 18, and just fighting the law ever since. We met, I think I was going through a bad boy phase I got pregnant, my parents said your marrying him and 12 years later here I am.
My husband has always been controlling, it's his way or he makes things unbearable. Holidays are horrible with him, because he makes it known that he's not happy. Money has always been tight with us, up until 4 years ago he jumped job to job, always excuses on why he would quit or get fired if he pissed off the people. He finally went and got his truck driving license and drives truck. Which is a good job because he can bitch at the cars and nobody hears him. Of course he calls me daily to bitch on the phone with me about how nobody knows how to drive. In the beginning of our marriage I had a lot of friends, well we would get invited to do things with them and he would speak his mind and alienate everyone. He thinks his way of thinking is right and everyone else is wrong. Now we don't get invited anywhere. My one friend left she does invite me when she knows he won't be around and I don't blame her. I've stayed home with the kids till they started school, which made finaces worse. I am working now, a work at home job. I tried going to a job but I'm sleeping with everyone that also works there and it just makes it more stressful on me. He does nothing but work, doesn't help around the house, I don't get to do much outside of the home unless I want to hear the bitching about how we can't afford the gas, or why I'm not home to make dinner. (and mind you when I go anywhere I have the 3 kids) 2 years ago, he left. We went through a really bad patch in the marriage and he started talking to a ex-girlfriend and he packed his bags got a apartment and moved out. Now 4 years ago I had a affair, and before I had the affair I tried to move out, and he went nuts. Of course I wasn't working at the time and I was stuck. So stupid me had the affair. But his reason was I had a affair and he had to move out to clear his head. We were seperated for 4 months, it was heaven. The kids and I were happier, no stress no yelling no judgements. And I let him come back. I could kick myself. Nothing changed, he moved out on his own for his reasons. And felt he didn't have to change. I'm re-reading what I'm writing and I'm softening it up. I hate to vent what really goes on, because it's been the same shit for 12 years. A month ago I told him I wanted to seperate again, he of course said no way if your not happy that's not my fault its yours and you gotta change it. Well I want to change I want to do things with my kids I want a life! He has the weekends off and all he does is sit on the couch and watch tv. And at night he comes home eats, watches tv and then goes to bed at 7:30, he watches tv till around 10 then actually goes to bed. But leaves me to deal with putting the kids to bed. And I get up with them in the mornings. The only thing he does is call and bitch at the schools or the kids or someone if it's not the way he likes it. The beginning of this school year he called and complained about the registration fees and told them hes not paying it. If the kids have to go to school then they should pay it and lunches. Up until last year we got free lunches so we didn't have to worry about it, but now we are over the income. And then there's the issue of school clothes for the kids. He doesn't think they need anything new to start school. Now I want my kids to go to school happy with new stuff, kids are harsh these days and they don't need that to start off the year especially since my daughter gets into trouble at school. He thinks we are broke all the time. Unless it's soemthing he wants to do he wont spend the money. He's got a loan through the bank for 20,000 for his sports car and his motorcycle. But I drive a beat up mini-van. We can't even put the kids in his car and go anywhere and be comfortable because its a 2 door. Up until last year my parents bought all the kids there school clothes, and then my mom took them shopping again yesterday because school started last week and they didn't get much new because my job isn't the best paying one. My paycheck goes for my van payment and the car insurance (both his and mine) the phone and cable and the water, and the kids stuff. He pays for the rent, the electric and his loan payments. And I also had to pay the school fees and the lunches that weren't paid last year. If I have to borrow money from him, he wants it all back even if its something for the kids or school related. We have never shared money, his money is his and mine is mine. When we go shopping for groceries, he seperates it, and he pays for what he thinks we need and I pay for what I want or the kids want. We don't own anything jointly, everything is either his or mine which is a pain in the butt with kids because they say well it's dads, he pays the bills, mostly because that's what he says all the time.
We live in a small community and everyone knows him. Business's have all came in contact with him and his mouth. And he threatens to sue everyone. There was a transaction on his bank statement, and omg he went off on the lady at the bank for 5 dollars. Said he was gonna pull his loans from that bank and go somewhere else if they didn't find out who was stealing. Well it was a error on his part of course he didn't call and tell them that. And I went into the bank the next day and the lady came to me and said tell your husband that we need that form signed asap when he gets it really rude to me and I get that all the time from the back lash of what he does to people and I hate it. I've appolized to the school numerous times and tell them I do not share his same opinions and values. But I just feel stupid. And the name calling..ive been called them all. I walk away now if we get into a fight and he calls me a name, I don't need to hear it. And him and our oldest daughter are like the same person. And when she's in a bad mood, well he has to make it worse by getting in her face and making a mountain out of a mole hill. My daughters counselors knows that I'm not happy and she knows how my husband is since the last family therapy we had he told her that nobody is gonna tell him how to raise his kids. And that her profession is a waste of time. Of course because she is a therapist all she can do is say well that's your opinion. Well I called her one day and she told me I needed someone to talk to about our marriage, and I ended up talking to her for 3 hours. Her opinion to me was your a broken family now, and you can either try to fix it or have a broken family seperated. And she said since you have already been seperated you have a upper hand in knowing how the kids and myself are without him.
OMG I wrote you all a book. And you know thats just the tip of the iceberg. I've read everyone else's posts, and I know how most of you are feeling. Somedays I have so much energy and that's the day I'm gonna pack up my bags and move in with my parents. Last time I packed me and the kids up though the cops were at the door and told me I couldn't take the kids from there homes. That if I wanted him to leave then I would have to take different action. Well of course I was so ashamed that he called the cops and embarrassed I just came home. Then other days I think things will change. But they don't. I read on here about making a list, well I actually put a pad and paper in front of him and told him to write down what he does for me and the kids, besides finacially. He couldn't write anything down. He threw the pad and paper across the room and said well if you don't see it that's not my problem. Well then a few hours later he gave me the pad and pen and asked what I want him to do. I didn't finish it. I figure in 12 years if he doesn't realize what would be helpful in our marriage then I'm done.
Being a long holiday weekend, it's gonna be torture for me and the kids. My brother comes from 4 hours away and spend the time at my parents which is 15 mins from here and he is going to bitch and complain about me going and taking the kids. He is also invited but all he does is bitch and complain the whole time asking when are we leaving.
I got the phone number for the legal aide to file for divorce, I want to call and find out information but I'm afraid. I know that it will be a fight with him. He already told me he would sit in jail rather then give me one dime of child support. And over my dead body am I going to take the kids from him. I'm just trying to courage myself up for the long road ahead of me, and it's hard. He always tells me after we fight about me wanting him out (normally a 3 hour lecture until I break down and don't want to hear that how I'm feeling is wrong so I just close off) that he does love me, but it's not even about love anymore.
thank you for letting me vent...it does help a lot.

What Can I Do If I Am in an Abusive Relationship?
If you think you are in an abusive relationship, seek help. There are a number of things you can do, but you will need the support of friends, professionals and others to take action.
If you are in an abusive relationship, you have two choices. You can stay in the relationship and try to stop the abuse, or you may need to leave the relationship. Either way, donâ??t do it alone. Donâ??t try to confront your abuser by yourself or try to leave without a well-established plan and help from others. It is important to carefully plan the right time to safely leave. Without help, your plan will probably fail, and you will probably receive more abuse from an angered partner.
There are many places for you to seek help:
friends and family
24-hour hotlines for advice and guidance
shelters where you and your children can stay temporarily
support groups where you can talk to other people in the same situation
legal advice to guide you if wish to separate or to get a restraining order
medical and mental health professionals who can care for your physical and emotional wounds
religious leaders who can support and counsel you
These people can give you emotional support if you decide to stay in the relationship. If you decide to leave, they can give you practical advice and assistance.
Forming a safety plan:
If you decide that you need to leave the relationship, it is very important that you have a safety plan. Being prepared and having a set plan will help you successfully and safely escape the abusive relationship. To develop your safety plan, you should:
1. Memorize these important phone numbers (or keep a list in a safe place, or write them on the bottom of your shoe):
police
domestic violence hotline
friends
local battered womenâ??s shelter
2. Tell a neighbor you trust about the abuse in your home. Ask them to call the police if she hears suspicious noises coming from your home or if she has not heard from you or seen you in a certain amount of time.
3. Get a cell phone and carry it with you all the time. Enter 911 into your speed dial.
4. Think of at least four safe places you can go if you leave your home.
You might:
stay with a friend or family member
go to a battered womenâ??s shelter
call 911; they can help you find a safe place.
If you are a woman, do not stay with a man unless he is a blood relative. Moving in with another man may hurt your ability to get custody of your children. It may also cause conflict with your abuser.
5. Always have spare change for a phone call.
6. Consider opening a savings account, so you will have access to money when you leave.
7. Review your escape plan and regularly rehearse your escape route with a support person.
8. Take special care. If you feel that your partner may stalk you, do not to leave a trail.
9. Put together an escape bag that contains important items, and leave it at a friendâ??s house or in a safe place (perhaps a locker at the bus station). If possible, try to include the following things in your bag:
address book
birth certificates for you and your children
change of clothing
childrenâ??s favorite toys, blankets, etc.
divorce papers, custody agreements
drivers license and registration
identification
insurance papers
keysâ??car, house, office
lease/rental agreements
medication
money, bank books, credit cards
mortgage payment book, current unpaid bills
passport, green card, work permits
personal Protection Order
school and medical records
Social Security cards
welfare identification
Remember, get help putting together, and if need be, carrying out your escape plan. Your attempt to leave will anger your abuser. If you donâ??t successfully get away, your partner may take it out on you.
' I'm afraid. I know that it will be a fight with him. He already told me he would sit in jail rather then give me one dime of child support. And over my dead body am I going to take the kids from him. I'm just trying to courage myself up for the long road ahead of me, and it's hard'
Yes it will be..but with a plan..you can get away with your children, with help and support. best of luck!!
The plus side is that you have so much going for you. I think it is "just" a matter of sorting things out in your mind and including making concrete plans with relevant information and support. Not that that is easy but I kept thinking, as I read your post, that it seemed doable to me.
The "book" you wrote us covered so much. No wonder it took a while to write. I feel as if I have learned so much about your situation and the people in it, not least about you and what you want. But it's not going to be easy for me to respond to all that. I can try to say some things that strike me though.
First, I thought that you sound as if you don't want to be with him in lots of ways. But you are far from silly so there will be good reasons why you got back with him and stay with him. I can't see the more personal reasons. The practical ones might just need the right advice for next time if there is one, don't you think, if things aren't to foul up? He obviously will get very difficult so you need good plans and legal advice before you make a move, if you choose to. Rushing in without getting your ducks in a row doesn't seem like a good move considering how he will try to come right back at you and wage war. So I think a good question is where will you get your advice from? A solicitor (legal person)?; a women's refuge? You could even think about going to the police and asking for advice.
From what you said, it seems obvious to me that your husband has a massive and diagnosable personality problem. I'd say he has an antisocial personality disorder (see http://psyweb.com/Mdisord/jsp/anpd.jsp ; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisocial_personality_disorder ). So, most importantly, you need to guard your and the children's safety. Secondly, there is no point your trying to get him to cooperate as he won't - ever - unless it suits him and then that isn't really copoperation. I noticed that you still seem to be hoping he'll change. I don't believe he will. That is what I think the counsellor was trying to tell you. You either put up with him as is or end it. But things will go easier with a guy like him if you are pleasant to him. You could look on it as a social skill to use with his type of guy. It is just using good strategy.
Having said that, I think there are some things you could change, were you to decide to stay with him (why you would is your call). But changing them won't, I believe, give you a considerate or loving husband as he can't be that. It will just even up things a bit. Eg:
1. You could pay for ONLY your and the kids costs AND get a secret saving account. He will take all he can get. You need to look out for you.
2. You could ignore his tantrums and insist more on what you do instead of wanting his permission. If you ask his permission then it doesn't make sense to me to complain if his answer doesn't agree with what you wanted. I think it makes better sense to ask yourself as a sensible adult what seems fair and to go for it. I sense that you will need support in doing so. Maybe join a battered women's group; do an assertion class; or start reading great authore like Beverly Engel (see Amazon.com). Her books helped me a lot. I liked Harriet Lerner's books too.
3. I think you need to get out more or he will take over your mind, and the rest. To reclaim yourself, I think you should ask youself what really appeals to you and attend those things - whatever - church; a course; a group. To hell with it if he thinks you are sleeping around; you just need a way to answer him back and do it anyway. Fighting about it doesn't work; just make your stand pleasantly and flick off his crap with things like a quiet, eg, "Actually no. I am doing this to learn about art (or whatever)." Then you keep moving. Don't hang around for a debate, fight or lecture. A three hour lecture is not on in my books - 5 seconds is too long. You are giving him your power. If you give it to him, you gave it to him. I know it can be scary not too. It may help to remind yourself that you are a precious person and do not deserve to be treated like garbage. I found it helpful to remind myself (as affirmations) that I am a daughter of a king (God). I deserve to be treated well. Also God is always here to help me. And God doesn't make junk. If you don't believe in God, just reframe this your way.
It is great that you have your family. He will see them as a threat to his power over you, and your friends too. I think it will be a good idea to insist on putting time in with them, and to share with them honestly how your life is. You can get police protection if he attacks you for doing anything.
I hope that helps. All the best.
He's a miserable uncommunicative man fuul of anger, who makes you and your children misreable, and very unhappy..
He thinks hes right all the time and antagonises everybody around him..
Hes angry with everyone, gives you and the children little money, and loses jobs because of his temper/attitiude.
You have no social life because he has driven everyone away. Also because of his inappropriate anger.
He yells at you, and trys to make it impossible for you to go out, and has been chatting up other women.
He thinks he can do no wrong, and has made your life hell for the last 12 years..
He ignores you, doesn't do anything to help you..and negates you by not communicating, and going to bed early.
He won't help your children and deprives them of things they should get, and need. And he directs anger at their school teachers. causing problems, and embarassing you your children and them.
You pay for nearly everything.
He takes his anger about the world in general, out on you.
He won't allow you enjoy time with your family.
You are afraid of him.
He seriously mentally and emotionally harasses and abuses you.
He is unpleasant, unhelpful and unco-operative, and very mean spitited, to you, and your children..
I hope and pray, that you get help and advise, and support to manage to get away...You and your children...deserve so much better...
And what a great idea to make that list! I might make one for myself. Thanks.
How come one minute he can be so nice and sincere and the next just a total monster? That's what I hate, and you start to feel okay maybe things can change and then they turn, and make you feel horrible. I guess that's why I've stayed with him so long because when it's good, it's tolerable. My mom was taken to the hospitol yesterday for her gallbladder and she's in surgery right now. My h has today off, and he ran to his mothers to put the starter in her car. We have 3 kids, 11, 10 and 7. Instead of taking all 3 of them with him and saying go to the hospitol and be with your dad and mom he took 1 kid with him and said I'll take one in case you have to go there for any emergencies and then you only have to deal with 2. GRRRR...He's going to his mother's there grandmother so there should be no reason not to bring all 3 of them. But that's the way his mother is. The kids are like a hassle and he feels the same way with having to go places. I've never had the freedom to just up and go or make plans to do things without worrying about who will watch the kids even if he's not working that day. I said well why can't you just take them all so I can head over there, and he said well when I get back we can all go over.
We had a talk on Saturday, he said that I don't open up and talk to him about things. But I can't. And I don't know if I want to. He takes things when I open up and always turns them around, or says I'm wrong all the time. And I can't keep letting him do that to me. Thank you all for your comments they really help alot.
He is some narcissist by the sound of it. And being like that his true love and interest is centered on himself and on being all powerul. This is his true character. He may DO things that SEEM nice but that is your generous (mis)interpretation of his motives. He is not there for you at all. I guess that is pretty hard for anybody to face when it is the partner and children's father we are talking about. I am sorry this is what you have to deal with.
