I always feel as though I am the only one who cant understand conversation in group settings. feel very lonely and my anxiety kicks in at these times. I have severe hearing loss even with hearing aids.
When I was born, the doctors did the APGAR test to make sure I was healthy, could see, hear, ect. Well they lost that list as far as we know. Anyways, fast forward to when I'm four years old, I had been going to speech therapy for a year or two because my speech was a bit delayed. One day mom tells the speech pathologist that I haven't been responding as quickly as I should be. Like she would say something, and I wouldn't know what she had said at first. The speech pathologist decides to do a hearing test on me and it turns out that I am hard of hearing and needed hearing aids.
By kindergarten, I have those hearing aids. Everything is a new world to me and it's something I learned to enjoy easily.
One day, sometime between 3 years old and 6 years old, my friend and I are playing 'sword fight' with each other. One has a stick and one has a light enough pipe. I ended up getting hit hard on the head with the pipe and I believe that is what has caused my severe hearing loss on my right ear.
Everything is fine though, until seventh grade hits. A whole new school merges in with my school because their town only offered pre-k through 6th grade. Everyone who isn't used to seeing a hard of hearing kid who has a deaf-ish accent still starts to make fun of me. My depression hits so hard that by the middle of the year, I'm ready to commit suicide. This depression started when I was ten years old and got increasingly worse as seventh grade year progressed. It didn't get better until ninth grade when I began to view myself differently than how I had.
Now I'm a senior in my high school and the depression that took over me in seventh grade is back, but for more reasons than previously. A lot of it does still stem from the fact that I can't hear well, even with my hearing aids in. I love the fact that I'm different than everyone else but I hate the fact that this is what makes me different. It gets even worse when I take out my hearing aids and suddenly, everything is muffled and silenced nearly.
I've had hearing loss my entire life, but it is still a major reason that I highly doubt it when someone hearing likes me, since I'm technically still hearing and I hate myself.
I lost 100 percent of my hearing when I was 10 years old thanks to an almost fatal bout of the measles.
I am now 85 years young.
I have had a good life. I am an amazing lipreader and very proud of it. I sometimes "interpret" for my friends and family when we are in a noisy room! Look for the positive things not the negative. You will be loved.
TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR SPEECH. Keep yourself up, your hair, your body, etc. in order to be a good role model for other deaf people.
OLIVE JUICE! (When mouthed, these two words look like "I Love You" when lipreading.
